šŸ”§ Ridgeline - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air your engine is breathing so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. When it gets contaminated or fails, you can get rough idle, hesitation, poor MPG, or a check-engine light. Replacing it is usually quick because it sits in the air intake tube near the air filter box.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns around the intake area.
  • āš ļø Turn ignition fully OFF and keep the key/fob away from the truck while unplugging sensors.
  • āš ļø If you disconnect the battery, you may need an idle relearn afterward.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF (it’s delicate).

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (specialty)
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring/seal (if supplied separately) - Qty: 1
  • Electrical contact cleaner - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air box and intake tube (between the air filter box and the engine).
  • If you plan to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the MAF sensor

  • Look at the intake tube right after the air filter box; the MAF is the small sensor housing with an electrical connector.
  • It’s usually held by two small screws.

Step 2: Unplug the electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the plug straight off the MAF.
  • If it’s stubborn, spray a small amount of electrical contact cleaner and try again (do not pry hard).

Step 3: Loosen the intake tube (only if needed for access)

  • If your hands/tools don’t fit well, loosen the intake tube clamp(s) using an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver (whichever your clamp uses).
  • Gently wiggle the tube for extra room—don’t crack or over-bend the plastic.

Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor

  • Remove the MAF mounting screws using a Phillips screwdriver (or 10mm socket if your sensor uses small bolts).
  • Carefully pull the sensor straight out.
  • Inspect the seal/O-ring. Replace it if it’s torn, flattened, or stuck in the housing.

Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Install the new seal/O-ring (if applicable), then slide the new MAF into place fully seated.
  • Start both screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the screws using an inch-pound torque wrench (specialty): Torque to 3.5 NĀ·m (31 in-lb).
  • Do not overtighten—plastic cracks easily.

Step 6: Reassemble and reconnect

  • If you loosened the intake tube, re-seat it fully and tighten the clamp(s) using an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
  • Wipe any fingerprints/oil off nearby intake parts using shop towels.

Step 7: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and tighten securely.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle. Confirm the idle is stable and there are no warning lights.
  • If the battery was disconnected: perform an idle relearn by fully warming the engine, turning OFF all loads (A/C, lights, rear defroster), then letting it idle for about 5 minutes.
  • Road test: light acceleration, steady cruise, and a few normal stops/starts. Recheck for a check-engine light.
  • If you have a scan tool, clear any stored MAF-related codes and confirm none return.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$380 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $90-$250 (parts only)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
