🔧 Impala - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Replacement

The MAF sensor measures how much air is entering your Impala’s engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. If it fails or gets contaminated, you can get rough idle, poor acceleration, stalling, or a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot components.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition while unplugging sensors.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the MAF sensing wires/element; it’s very delicate.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Torx T20 bit
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension (3")
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm wrench
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring/seal (if not included with sensor) - Qty: 1
  • Mass air flow sensor cleaner (aerosol) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • If you want maximum safety from accidental shorts, disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Use a flashlight to find the air intake tube between the air filter box and the engine.
  • The MAF sensor is mounted in the intake tube/air duct and has an electrical connector plugged into it.

Step 2: Disconnect the MAF electrical connector

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently release the connector lock (don’t pry hard).
  • Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • If it won’t release, re-check the lock tab.

Step 3: Remove the MAF sensor screws

  • Use a Torx T20 bit with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 1/4" drive extension (3") to remove the two MAF retaining screws.
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.
  • Torque note: GM commonly does not publish a service torque for these small MAF screws; reinstall snug only (do not overtighten).

Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor from the housing

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake housing.
  • Do not touch the sensing element (the tiny wires/film inside).
  • Check whether an O-ring/seal stayed on the sensor or is still in the housing.

Step 5: (Recommended) Clean the intake opening and compare parts

  • Use a flashlight to check the opening for dirt or a torn seal.
  • Compare the new MAF sensor to the old one (same shape, connector, and mounting holes).
  • If you’re reusing the old sensor (diagnostic step), spray it with mass air flow sensor cleaner and let it air-dry fully before reinstalling.

Step 6: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Make sure the MAF sensor O-ring/seal is in place (either on the sensor or in the housing).
  • Insert the MAF sensor straight into the housing without forcing it.
  • Install the screws by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten using the Torx T20 bit, 1/4" drive ratchet, and extension.
  • Torque note: Tighten snug only; stop as soon as it seats.

Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector on until it clicks/locks (no gap).
  • Gently tug-check the connector by hand to confirm it’s secure.

Step 8: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • Tighten securely (do not strip the terminal).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Listen for smooth idle.
  • Check that the intake tube and MAF area are fully seated and there are no air leaks (a loose intake can cause rough running).
  • If the check engine light was on, use a scan tool to clear codes and confirm they don’t return after a short test drive.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes with gentle acceleration first, then normal driving.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $60-$250 (parts only)

You Save: $120-$200+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
