🔧 Grand Cherokee - Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the 5.7L HEMI does not use a traditional Mass Air Flow sensor. It uses a MAP sensor instead, which stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor and helps the engine computer calculate airflow using intake manifold pressure.

This guide covers replacing the MAP sensor, which is the correct airflow-related sensor on your Grand Cherokee.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the intake manifold.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on sensor wires. Pull only on the connector body.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt and debris out of the intake opening while the sensor is removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Pick tool
  • Clean shop towel
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAP sensor O-ring seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • A pick tool is a small pointed tool used to gently lift connector locks or remove small seals.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAP Sensor

  • Stand at the front of your Grand Cherokee and look at the top of the engine.
  • The MAP sensor is mounted on the intake manifold area and has a small electrical connector attached.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dirt from around the sensor before removing it.
  • Clean first, remove second.

Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a pick tool or flathead screwdriver to gently release the connector lock if it is stuck.
  • Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
  • Do not yank the wiring harness.

Step 3: Remove the MAP Sensor

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet if your sensor is retained by a bolt.
  • Remove the retaining bolt and set it aside safely.
  • Pull the MAP sensor straight out by hand with a gentle twisting motion.
  • If the O-ring is stuck in the intake opening, use a pick tool to remove it carefully.
  • Do not drop debris inside.

Step 4: Compare the New Sensor

  • Compare the new Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor with the old one by hand before installation.
  • Make sure the connector shape, mounting point, and sealing O-ring match.
  • Lightly wipe the sensor opening with a clean shop towel.

Step 5: Install the New MAP Sensor

  • Install the new MAP sensor O-ring seal onto the new sensor if it is not already installed.
  • Push the new MAP sensor straight into the intake manifold by hand until fully seated.
  • Install the retaining bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the retaining bolt snugly.
  • Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs)

Step 6: Reconnect the Sensor Connector

  • Push the electrical connector onto the MAP sensor by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
  • Use a clean shop towel to remove fingerprints or dirt from the area.

Step 7: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the battery terminal clamp securely.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Check that the engine idles smoothly and does not stall.
  • If the check engine light was on, it may clear after several drive cycles, or it can be cleared with a scan tool.
  • Take a short test drive and watch for hesitation, rough idle, or warning lights.
  • If codes return for MAP, throttle body, or intake pressure, inspect the wiring connector and intake vacuum leaks.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $180-$350 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $40-$120 (parts only)
