🔧 MAF Sensor - Replacement
This job replaces the mass air flow sensor on your Camry. On the hybrid 2.5L intake system, the sensor reads incoming air so the engine computer can meter fuel correctly. If the sensor is dirty, damaged, or has an electrical fault, replacing it can restore smooth idle, throttle response, and fuel economy.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
Assumption: the original sensor is being replaced and the intake ducting is stock.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle before unplugging the sensor.
- Let the engine cool down if it has been running. The air intake area can be warm.
- Do not spray cleaner into the new sensor unless the part instructions specifically say to.
- Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF sensor. It is very delicate.
- If you disconnect the 12V battery, you may lose some saved settings. This is not usually required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 1/4-inch ratchet
- 1/4-inch extension

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Make sure the ignition is off.
- Open the hood and locate the air intake tube between the air filter box and throttle body.
- Wait for the engine bay to cool if needed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the MAF sensor
- Open the hood and find the MAF sensor mounted in the intake tube near the air cleaner box.
- Use an 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver to loosen any intake duct clamps or air box fasteners if they block access.
- Lift the intake tube slightly if needed for better access.
Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the plug straight off the sensor.
- If the connector is tight, use a trim panel tool to gently help release the lock tab.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the sensor
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the MAF sensor mounting screws.
- Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
- Keep the screws in a safe place if the new sensor does not include replacements.
Step 4: Install the new sensor
- Place the new mass air flow sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
- Install the screws by hand first, then tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.
- Torque to 2 N·m (18 in-lbs).
- Snug is enough.
Step 5: Reconnect and reassemble
- Push the electrical connector back onto the sensor until it clicks.
- If you loosened the intake tube or air box, reinstall and tighten the clamps with an 8mm socket or Phillips screwdriver.
- Make sure all hoses and clamps are seated correctly.
✅ After Repair
- Start the vehicle and let it idle for a minute.
- Check that the engine runs smoothly and that no warning lights are on.
- If the check engine light was on before, clear codes with a scan tool and confirm they do not return.
- Take a short test drive and verify normal throttle response.
