🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement
The MAF sensor on your Prius measures incoming air so the engine computer can set the right fuel mixture. If it is failing, you may see rough idle, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool before touching the air intake parts.
- Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal if you want extra safety around the electrical connector.
- Do not touch the sensor wire or sensing element with your fingers.
- Use only MAF-safe cleaner if you are reusing the old sensor housing; do not spray brake cleaner or carb cleaner on it.

Step 3: Remove the sensor
- Remove the MAF sensor screws with a flathead screwdriver or the correct small driver if your sensor uses them.
- Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
- Keep the sensor straight and clean.
Step 4: Install the new sensor
- Place the new MAF sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
- Install and snug the screws by hand, then tighten gently with the flathead screwdriver.

- Tighten the intake clamp with a 7mm socket.
- Reinstall and lock all air box clips.
Step 6: Verify the repair
- Start the Prius and let it idle.
- Check that the check engine light is off.
- Listen for air leaks or a loose intake connection.
✅ After Repair
