🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement

The MAF sensor on your Prius measures incoming air so the engine computer can set the right fuel mixture. If it is failing, you may see rough idle, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool before touching the air intake parts.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal if you want extra safety around the electrical connector.
  • Do not touch the sensor wire or sensing element with your fingers.
  • Use only MAF-safe cleaner if you are reusing the old sensor housing; do not spray brake cleaner or carb cleaner on it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Trim clip tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
  • Air cleaner gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the engine is fully stopped.
  • If disconnecting the 12V battery, save radio and clock settings first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air cleaner box

  • Release the air filter housing clips and loosen the intake duct clamp using a 7mm socket.
  • Lift the air cleaner cover enough to access the MAF sensor on the air duct.
  • Do not yank on the wiring.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF sensor

  • Press the connector lock tab and unplug the electrical connector by hand.
  • If the connector is tight, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver, but do not pry hard.

Step 3: Remove the sensor

  • Remove the MAF sensor screws with a flathead screwdriver or the correct small driver if your sensor uses them.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
  • Keep the sensor straight and clean.

Step 4: Install the new sensor

  • Place the new MAF sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install and snug the screws by hand, then tighten gently with the flathead screwdriver.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 5: Reassemble the air intake

  • Lower the air cleaner cover back into place.
  • Tighten the intake clamp with a 7mm socket.
  • Reinstall and lock all air box clips.

Step 6: Verify the repair

  • Start the Prius and let it idle.
  • Check that the check engine light is off.
  • Listen for air leaks or a loose intake connection.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive normally and confirm smooth acceleration.
  • If the check engine light stays on, clear codes with a scan tool and recheck for intake leaks.
  • If the old sensor was only dirty, a relearn may happen automatically after a few drive cycles.
