🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement

The MAF sensor on your Silverado measures the amount of air entering the engine so the fuel system can stay balanced. If it is dirty or faulty, you may see rough idle, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the engine cool if it has been running; the intake tube and air box area can be warm.
  • Do not touch the MAF sensor wire or sensing element with your fingers.
  • Use care when unplugging the connector so the locking tab does not break.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if needed.
  • Locate the air cleaner box and intake tube near the front of the engine bay.
  • Keep the intake opening clean.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the intake duct if needed

  • Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to loosen the air intake clamps on the duct if they block access to the sensor.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if your clamp style uses a screw head instead of a socket head.
  • Lift the duct out carefully and set it aside.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF sensor

  • Press the connector lock tab by hand and pull the electrical connector straight off the sensor.
  • Do not pull on the wires.
  • Release the tab first.

Step 3: Remove the sensor

  • Use the 8mm socket or the correct small driver for the sensor screws, depending on what is fitted.
  • Remove the sensor screws and lift the MAF sensor out of the intake tube or housing.
  • Remove the old seal if the new sensor includes one.
  • Torque the sensor screws to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) when installing the new part.

Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Place the new seal in position if required.
  • Set the new sensor in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the screws to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reconnect the harness and reassemble the intake

  • Push the connector onto the sensor until it clicks.
  • If removed, reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamps with the 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Make sure the duct is fully seated so no unmetered air can enter.
  • Check every hose connection twice.

Step 6: Verify the repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for air leaks around the intake tube and sensor area.
  • Make sure the check engine light stays off or clears after a drive cycle if the fault was fixed.

✅ After Repair

  • Take a short test drive and check for smooth throttle response.
  • If the check engine light remains on, scan for codes and clear them after confirming the repair.
  • Inspect the air intake clamps again after the test drive.
