🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement

The MAF sensor on your Sierra measures the air entering the engine so the computer can set fuel mixture correctly. If it is dirty or failed, you may see rough idle, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a check engine light. Replacement is usually quick because the sensor is mounted in the intake tract.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the engine cool if the intake area is warm.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the sensor to reduce the chance of a fault code.
  • Do not touch the MAF sensing element inside the sensor.
  • Handle the air intake tube and sensor carefully to avoid cracking the plastic housing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor seal or O-ring - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shut the engine off and open the hood.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the sensor connector.
  • If the air filter box is packed tightly around the sensor, make sure the air intake parts are fully unclipped before forcing anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Find the sensor in the air intake tube between the air filter box and throttle body.
  • Look for an electrical connector plugged into a sensor body mounted in the intake housing.
  • Follow the air filter box outlet.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 3: Disconnect the MAF electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the plug straight off the sensor.
  • If the tab is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help release the lock.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the sensor

  • Use a 7mm socket and ratchet to remove the MAF sensor screws.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
  • Check the seal or O-ring and remove it if it stays behind in the housing.

Step 5: Install the new sensor

  • Install the new mass air flow sensor in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow or marking, if present, points in the correct direction.
  • Install the screws by hand first, then tighten them with the 7mm socket.
  • Torque to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
  • Snug is enough.

Step 6: Reconnect the connector and battery

  • Push the electrical connector onto the sensor until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • Tighten the battery terminal securely.

Step 7: Verify the repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a minute.
  • Check that the check engine light stays off.
  • Listen for intake leaks or a loose connector.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive the Sierra and watch for smooth acceleration.
  • If a code was stored, clear it with a scan tool if it does not clear on its own.
  • If the engine still runs poorly, inspect the air filter box, intake tube, and clamps for leaks.
