🔧 MAF Sensor - Replacement

The Mass Air Flow sensor on your Sierra sits in the intake tract and measures incoming air so the engine can meter fuel correctly. If it fails, you may see rough idle, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a check engine light. Replacing it is usually a quick job with basic hand tools.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and let the intake area cool before starting.
  • Keep dirt out of the intake tube and air box. A dirty intake can cause driveability problems.
  • Do not spray cleaner directly into the new sensor unless the part maker specifically allows it.
  • Battery disconnect is not required, but removing the negative battery cable can help prevent accidental shorts.
  • Handle the sensor gently.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small torque wrench (inch-pounds)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shut the engine off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the truck.
  • If you disconnect the battery, remove the negative cable first.
  • Let the engine and intake duct cool if the truck was recently driven.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air intake area

  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box and intake tube.
  • Use a 7mm socket to loosen the intake duct clamp if it blocks access to the sensor.
  • If needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip tool to release any air duct retainers.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF sensor

  • Find the electrical connector on the sensor body.
  • Press the lock tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old sensor

  • Use the correct small driver or 7mm socket if your sensor uses screws to remove the fasteners.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing or intake tube.
  • Check the seal or O-ring for damage.

Step 4: Install the new sensor

  • Place the new sensor in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow or marked direction points the correct way, toward the engine.
  • Install the screws by hand first, then tighten with a small torque wrench (inch-pounds).
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reconnect the intake and electrical connector

  • Reconnect the sensor plug until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamp with a 7mm socket.
  • Torque the intake clamp snug, about 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 6: Verify the repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check that the engine runs smoothly and the check engine light is off.
  • If a scanner is available, clear any stored MAF-related codes.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive the truck for 10-15 minutes.
  • Watch for hesitation, rough idle, or warning lights.
  • If codes return, inspect the intake tube for air leaks or a loose connector.
  • A clean air filter helps protect the new sensor.
