🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement

The MAF sensor on your Sierra measures the amount of air entering the engine. If it is dirty or failing, you may get rough idle, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a check engine light. Replacing it is a straightforward job on the air intake tube.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and let it cool before working near the intake and engine bay.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want to prevent a fault from setting while unplugging the sensor.
  • Do not touch the new sensor element with your fingers.
  • Use only MAF-safe cleaner if you are cleaning the intake tube area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • If the engine cover blocks access, remove it first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the MAF sensor

  • Open the hood and find the air intake tube between the air filter box and throttle body.
  • The MAF sensor is mounted in the intake tube or air duct with an electrical connector attached.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 3: Unplug the MAF sensor

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the electrical connector straight off the sensor.
  • If it is tight, use a flat-blade trim tool to gently release the tab.

Step 4: Remove the sensor

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the MAF sensor screws.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
  • Do not drop debris into the intake.

Step 5: Install the new sensor

  • Set the new MAF sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the Torx screws by hand first, then tighten them snugly with the Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the connector and battery

  • Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.

Step 7: Start and verify

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check that the check engine light is off and the idle is smooth.
  • Make sure there are no intake leaks or loose connectors.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive the vehicle for 10-15 minutes.
  • Watch for hesitation, rough idle, or a returning warning light.
  • If the check engine light was on before, clear codes with a scan tool if needed.
