📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and make sure the ignition is off.
- Wait at least 2 minutes after turning the ignition off before unplugging the sensor.
- An OBD2 scan tool is a small plug-in reader that connects under the dash and clears engine codes after the repair.
- The MAF sensor is mounted in the air intake duct near the air filter box on your Escape.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use an 8mm wrench to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Negative cable is usually black.
Step 2: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Stand at the front of your Escape and look at the air filter box on the driver-side area of the engine bay.
- Find the black plastic intake tube coming out of the air filter box.
- The MAF sensor is the small electrical sensor mounted into that intake tube with a wiring connector attached.
Step 3: Unplug the Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the lock while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
- Be gentle with old plastic clips.
Step 4: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the 2 screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
- Place the screws somewhere safe so they do not fall into the engine bay.
- If the new sensor does not include screws, reuse the original screws.
Step 5: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Pull the old MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube by hand.
- Do not twist hard or pry against the plastic tube.
- Check that the sealing O-ring comes out with the old sensor if equipped.
Step 6: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Compare the new mass air flow sensor to the old one to make sure the shape and connector match.
- Insert the new sensor straight into the intake tube by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat and the seal is not pinched.
- Flat seating prevents air leaks.
Step 7: Tighten the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to install the 2 MAF sensor screws.
- Tighten them evenly until snug.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The intake tube and sensor housing are plastic.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the wiring connector straight onto the new MAF sensor by hand.
- Listen or feel for the locking tab to click into place.
- Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use an 8mm wrench to tighten the clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the battery clamp.
Step 10: Clear Codes and Start the Engine
- Plug the OBD2 scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side of the dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear any stored engine codes related to the old MAF sensor.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 3-5 minutes without pressing the gas pedal.
