The MAF sensor sits in the intake tube and measures incoming air so the engine computer can set fuel mixture correctly. On your Explorer, replacement is a simple unplug-and-unbolt job, but you must handle the sensor carefully so you do not damage the delicate sensing element.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool down.
  • Make sure the air filter box and intake tube are properly seated before installing the new sensor.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover if equipped

  • If your Explorer has a plastic engine cover, lift it straight up by hand.
  • If it is tight, gently rock it while pulling upward. No tool is usually needed.

Step 2: Locate the MAF sensor

  • Find the sensor in the air intake tube between the air filter box and the turbo inlet.
  • It will have an electrical connector attached and usually be held in with small screws.

Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the plug straight off by hand.
  • If the lock is stiff, use a small flat blade screwdriver to gently release the tab.
  • Do not pry hard.

Step 4: Remove the sensor screws

  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet with the 1/4-inch extension to remove the MAF sensor screws.
  • Keep the screws in a safe place.
  • Work slowly to avoid stripping the heads.

Step 5: Remove the old sensor

  • Pull the MAF sensor straight out of the housing.
  • If it is stuck, twist it very gently while pulling.
  • Inspect the seal or gasket for damage.

Step 6: Install the new sensor

  • Place the new MAF sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the seal sits flat and the sensor is fully seated.
  • Reinstall the screws with the 8mm socket and tighten them snugly.
  • Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the sensor until it clicks.
  • Give it a light tug to confirm it is locked in place.

Step 8: Reassemble the intake components

  • Check that the intake tube and clamp are seated correctly.
  • If you loosened any clamps, tighten them with the flat blade screwdriver or appropriate tool.
  • Reinstall the engine cover if equipped.

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check for a smooth idle and make sure the check engine light is off.
  • Listen for hissing or whistling that could mean an air leak.
  • If the light stays on, clear codes with a scan tool and recheck for loose connectors or intake leaks.
