🔧 Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor - Replacement

The MAF sensor on your Sienna sits in the air intake stream and helps the engine control fuel delivery. If it fails or gets contaminated, you may see rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light. Replacing it is a quick job, and the main goal is to avoid damaging the sensor or letting dirt into the intake.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool before working near the air intake area.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want to avoid setting a fault while unplugging the sensor.
  • Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF sensor. It is fragile.
  • Keep dust, leaves, and tools out of the intake tube.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor O-ring or seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off completely.
  • If the engine cover is installed, remove it first.
  • If the battery is disconnected, you may need to reset the clock and window auto-up settings after the repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air intake area

  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box and intake tube.
  • The MAF sensor is mounted at the air cleaner outlet tube near the air box.
  • Use your hands to clear any loose debris around the area before opening it.

Step 2: Disconnect the MAF sensor connector

  • Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab.
  • Pull the electrical connector straight off the sensor.
  • Do not pry on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the sensor

  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the sensor retaining screws.
  • Lift the MAF sensor straight out of the housing.
  • If it sticks, wiggle it gently by hand. Do not twist hard.

Step 4: Install the new sensor

  • Compare the new sensor to the old one to make sure it matches.
  • Install the new O-ring or seal if equipped.
  • Set the sensor into place with the airflow arrow facing the correct direction.
  • Install the retaining screws by hand first, then snug them with the 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reconnect the wiring

  • Push the connector onto the sensor until it clicks.
  • Make sure the lock tab is fully seated.
  • Reinstall any engine cover if removed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a minute.
  • Check that the check engine light is off.
  • Listen for air leaks or a loose intake hose.
  • If the light stays on, clear the code with a scan tool and recheck the connector and intake seals.
