🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement
The mass air flow sensor measures incoming air so the engine computer can set fuel delivery correctly. If it is dirty or failing, your Corolla may idle rough, hesitate, or turn on the check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- Let the engine cool if it was recently running. The air box area can be warm.
- Do not touch the MAF sensing element. It is very delicate.
- Do not use brake cleaner or carb cleaner on the sensor. Use only MAF-safe cleaner if cleaning.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 1/4-inch ratchet
- 1/4-inch extension
- Trim clip tool
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
- MAF sensor O-ring or seal - Qty: 1
- Air intake duct clamp - Qty: 1 if damaged
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and make sure the engine is fully shut down.
- Open the hood and locate the air box and intake tube.
- Keep the sensor facing upward when removed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the air intake duct
- Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the intake tube clamp.
- If there are any clips or retainers, use the trim clip tool to release them.
- Carefully lift the intake duct out of the way so you can reach the sensor.
- Do not force brittle plastic.
Step 2: Unplug the MAF sensor
- Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull the plug straight off by hand.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or broken tabs.
Step 3: Remove the sensor
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the sensor screws.
- Lift the sensor straight out of the air box or housing.
- If it sticks, wiggle it gently. Do not pry hard.
Step 4: Install the new sensor
- Set the new sensor in place with the arrow or airflow direction matching the original position.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to install the screws.
- Tighten to 1.5 N·m (13 in-lbs) if the screws are factory-style plastic housing screws.
- Snug is enough. Do not overtighten.
Step 5: Reconnect the intake and wiring
- Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamp with the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
- Tighten the clamp to 3.5 N·m (31 in-lbs).
Step 6: Final check
- Make sure all tools are removed from the engine bay.
- Close the hood.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
✅ After Repair
- Check that the engine idles smoothly.
- Make sure the check engine light stays off after a short drive.
- If the light was on before, clear codes with a scan tool after the repair.
- If the idle is still rough, inspect for intake leaks or a dirty throttle body.
