🔧 MAF Sensor - Replacement

The mass air flow sensor measures the air entering your Rogue so the engine computer can set fuel delivery correctly. If it fails, you may notice rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, or a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool before working near the intake tract.
  • Do not spray cleaner or touch the sensing element on the new sensor.
  • Keep dirt out of the air intake opening while the sensor is removed.
  • Battery disconnect is not required, but disconnecting the negative battery cable can help clear codes after repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small pick tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1
  • MAF sensor seal or O-ring - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • If you plan to clear codes by disconnecting power, wait a few minutes before touching the battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air intake area

  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box and intake tube on the top of the engine bay.
  • Use the Phillips screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the intake hose clamp if it blocks access to the sensor.
  • Keep the intake opening clean.

Step 2: Disconnect the MAF sensor connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and unplug the wiring connector from the MAF sensor.
  • If the tab is tight, use a small pick tool gently to help release the lock.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old sensor

  • Use the Phillips screwdriver or 8mm socket to remove the sensor retaining screws.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
  • Inspect the seal or O-ring and remove it if it comes out with the sensor.

Step 4: Install the new sensor

  • Place the new MAF sensor seal or O-ring in position if needed.
  • Install the new sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Use the Phillips screwdriver or 8mm socket to tighten the retaining screws.
  • Torque to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
  • Snug is enough here.

Step 5: Reconnect the intake and wiring

  • Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall and tighten the intake hose clamp with the Phillips screwdriver or 8mm socket.
  • Make sure the air intake tube is fully seated and there are no gaps.

Step 6: Start and verify

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check for a smooth idle and make sure the check engine light is off.
  • If the light stays on, clear the code with a scan tool and recheck the connector and intake seals.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive the vehicle for normal acceleration and idle quality.
  • Check the intake tube and sensor area for any air leaks.
  • If the battery was disconnected, your idle may relearn after a short drive.
