🔧 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Replacement

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures the air entering your engine so the computer can set fuel correctly. On your Versa, replacing it is straightforward because it sits in the air intake tube between the air filter box and the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool before starting. The intake area can be hot.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the sensor.
  • Do not touch the sensor element inside the MAF with your fingers.
  • Do not use brake cleaner or carb cleaner on the new sensor.
  • Work carefully around the air intake so no dirt falls into the engine.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small extension
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it has been running.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the MAF sensor.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air intake area

  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box and intake tube on top of the engine bay.
  • If the intake tube or air box cover blocks access, use an 8mm socket and ratchet to loosen the hose clamps or fasteners.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver if a clamp uses a screw-style head.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use an 8mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • Keep the cable isolated.

Step 3: Unplug the MAF sensor

  • Find the electrical connector on the MAF sensor.
  • Press the connector lock tab and pull the plug straight off by hand.
  • If it is tight, use a trim clip tool very gently to help release the lock.

Step 4: Remove the old sensor

  • Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the MAF sensor screws.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the housing.
  • Check that the old O-ring or seal comes out with the sensor.

Step 5: Install the new sensor

  • Compare the new sensor to the old one before installing it.
  • Place the new sensor into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the screws by hand first, then tighten them with an 8mm socket.
  • Torque to 2.5-3.5 Nm (22-31 in-lbs).
  • Snug is enough here.

Step 6: Reconnect everything

  • Plug the electrical connector back into the MAF sensor until it clicks.
  • Reinstall any air intake parts you removed.
  • Tighten the hose clamps with the 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 8mm socket.

Step 7: Verify the repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check that the engine runs smoothly and the check engine light is off.
  • Look for loose intake clamps or disconnected hoses.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the vehicle normally and confirm throttle response is smooth.
  • If the check engine light stays on, clear codes with a scan tool.
  • If the engine still runs rough, inspect the air filter box, intake tube, and connector again.
