📋 Before You Begin
- 🧭 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the front wheels.
- Run the fuel level as low as possible (under 1/4 tank is ideal).

- Do you have the standard tank or the larger-capacity tank?
- “Lock ring” is the metal ring that twists to hold the module in the tank.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure
- Open the hood.
- Use your owner’s manual fuse/relay diagram and remove the fuel pump relay or fuse using the trim tool.
- Start the engine and let it run until it stalls; crank for 3 seconds more.
- Turn the key off.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it.
Step 3: Safely raise and support the truck
- Lift the rear with the floor jack and support the frame with jack stands.
Step 4: Support the fuel tank
- Position a transmission jack under the center of the fuel tank.
- If needed, siphon fuel out using a hand siphon pump (fuel-rated) into approved containers.
Step 5: Disconnect filler neck and vent lines
- Use an 8mm socket or flat trim tool (as equipped) to loosen the filler neck clamps and detach the filler hose at the tank.
- Disconnect EVAP/vent hoses by releasing the quick-connect tabs using the trim tool.
Step 6: Disconnect electrical and fuel lines at the tank
- Unplug the fuel pump module electrical connector.
- Disconnect the fuel supply/return (as equipped) using the fuel line disconnect tool set (5/16" and 3/8").
- Catch any drips with a drain pan and shop towels.
Step 7: Remove tank straps and lower the tank
- Use the appropriate socket from your socket set (8mm-21mm) with a ratchet (and breaker bar if needed) to remove the tank strap bolts.
- Slowly lower the tank on the transmission jack while watching for any remaining hoses/wiring.
- Torque note: Strap bolt torque varies by tank/strap configuration; once you answer the two questions above, I’ll give you the correct Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs) spec for reassembly.
Step 8: Clean the area and remove the pump module lock ring
- Blow/brush dirt off the top of the tank (keep debris out). Use shop towels.
- Use a brass drift punch and dead-blow hammer to tap the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
Step 9: Remove the fuel pump module
- Lift the module straight up carefully.
- Angle it as needed to clear the float arm (fuel level sensor arm).
- Remove the old seal O-ring from the tank opening.
Step 10: Install the new seal and module
- Install the new tank seal O-ring into the tank groove.
- Lower the new module into the tank, keeping the float arm from bending.
- Reinstall the lock ring and tap it clockwise using the brass drift punch and dead-blow hammer until fully seated/locked.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector seal.
Step 11: Raise the tank and reconnect lines
- Raise the tank into position using the transmission jack.
- Reconnect fuel lines until they click/lock; tug lightly to confirm engagement.
- Reconnect EVAP/vent lines and the electrical connector.
- Reconnect the filler hose and tighten clamps using the 8mm socket (as equipped).
Step 12: Reinstall straps and torque fasteners
- Install tank straps and bolts using the ratchet.
- Tighten with the torque wrench after you confirm your tank/bed method so I can provide the correct spec.
Step 13: Restore power and prime the system
- Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
- Key ON (engine OFF) for 10 seconds, then OFF for 10 seconds; repeat 3 times to prime.
- If you have a scan tool, run a fuel pump prime/output test using the scan tool (optional).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Check carefully for leaks at every quick-connect and at the top of the tank.
- Road test 5-10 minutes, then re-check for leaks.
- If a check engine light appears, scan for codes; EVAP line connectors are a common cause.
