🔧 Niro - Fuel Pump Replacement
Your Niro has two different “fuel pumps” depending on what failed: an in-tank low-pressure fuel pump (inside the fuel tank) and an engine-mounted high-pressure fuel pump (feeds the direct-injection system). The replacement procedure, parts, and safety steps are very different, especially on a plug-in hybrid.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-4.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Your Niro is a high-voltage hybrid. Do not touch orange cables or hybrid components.
- ⚠️ Fuel is flammable. Work outside or in a well-ventilated area; no smoking/sparks.
- ⚠️ Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel line to prevent spray.
- ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel odor, stop and address leaks before proceeding.
- 🔋 I recommend disconnecting the 12V negative terminal before unplugging fuel pump wiring.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel pump (in-tank module) OR high-pressure fuel pump - Qty: 1
- Fuel pump seal / tank gasket - Qty: 1
- Fuel line O-rings (as applicable) - Qty: 1 set
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open a window (in case the car locks).
- Run the fuel level down if possible; a fuller tank makes in-tank work messier.
- Please confirm 2 things so I give the exact correct procedure:
- Are you replacing the in-tank fuel pump (under rear seat area) or the engine-mounted high-pressure fuel pump?
- Do you have any codes like P0087 / P0088 / P0191, or is it a “no start / whining pump / low pressure” symptom?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which pump you’re replacing
- Turn the car to READY and listen near the rear seat area for a 2–3 second prime sound.
- If your issue is “cranks but won’t start” with low-pressure symptoms, it often points to the in-tank pump.
- If your issue is loss of power under load and codes related to rail pressure, it can point to the high-pressure pump.
- Reply with which pump you mean, and I’ll give you the full, torque-spec’d procedure for your Niro.
Step 2: Do a safe fuel pressure relief (pre-step for either pump)
- Open the hood and remove the 12V negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging fuel-related connectors.
- Tip: Keep towels ready for any drips.
✅ After Repair
- Cycle ignition/READY several times to prime fuel before attempting to start.
- Check carefully for leaks at every connection while the car is running.
- If a check engine light remains, scan and confirm no fuel pressure codes return.
