🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure
- Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse panel.
- Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
- Crank for 2-3 more seconds to bleed off remaining pressure.
- Keep the key away from the car.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
Step 3: Access the pump service cover
- Fold the rear seat cushion up and remove the service access cover from the floor.
- Use a flat-blade trim tool to carefully lift the cover without bending it.
Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel line
- Unplug the fuel pump electrical connector by pressing the lock tab.
- Use a fuel line disconnect tool to release the fuel supply line.
- Wrap the line with a shop towel before disconnecting it.
Step 5: Remove the pump lock ring
- Clean the top of the pump module first so dirt does not fall into the tank.
- Use a fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to turn the locking ring counterclockwise.
- Lift the ring off and set it aside.
- Mark the module position before removal.
Step 6: Remove the fuel pump module
- Carefully lift the pump module out of the tank.
- Angle the float arm gently so it does not bend.
- Drain excess fuel into a drain pan.
Step 7: Install the new fuel pump module
- Compare the new module to the old one before installation.
- Install the new fuel pump seal / O-ring on the tank opening.
- Lower the new module into the tank in the same orientation as the original.
- Use the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to tighten the ring.
- Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect lines and wiring
- Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks fully into place.
- Plug in the electrical connector until the lock tab snaps.
- Double-check that the hose and connector are fully seated.
Step 9: Reassemble the access area
- Reinstall the service cover and rear seat trim.
- Use the flat-blade trim tool to seat clips evenly.
Step 10: Restore power and prime the system
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
- Turn the ignition on for 5 seconds, then off.
- Repeat this 3 times to prime the fuel system.
- Check carefully for leaks around the pump cover and fuel line.
