📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel tank as low as safely possible before starting. Less fuel means less spill risk.
  • Open the fuel filler cap to release tank vapor pressure, then close it again.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • If the car has been running recently, let the exhaust cool first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel system pressure

  • Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then start the engine and let it stall.
  • Turn the key off.
  • If needed, use a scan tool to confirm fuel pressure is near zero before opening the system.
  • Crank only until it stalls.

Step 2: Access the fuel pump module

  • Fold the rear seat bottom forward or remove it as needed.
  • Use a trim panel tool to lift the access cover over the fuel pump module.
  • Remove any foam or sound deadening around the opening.

Step 3: Disconnect electrical and fuel connections

  • Unplug the fuel pump electrical connector by pressing the lock tab.
  • Use the fuel line disconnect tool to release the fuel supply line.
  • Wrap the connection with shop towels first, because a small amount of fuel may spill.

Step 4: Remove the lock ring

  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to loosen the retaining ring.
  • Lift the ring out carefully and set it aside.
  • Keep dirt out of the tank opening.

Step 5: Remove the old pump module

  • Slowly lift the fuel pump module out of the tank.
  • Angle it carefully so the float arm clears the opening.
  • Let fuel drain from the module into a drain pan.
  • Remove the old seal from the tank opening.

Step 6: Install the new seal and pump module

  • Clean the sealing surface on the tank with a lint-free rag.
  • Install the new fuel pump module seal.
  • Lower the new pump module into the tank in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the float arm and pickup screen are positioned correctly.

Step 7: Install and torque the lock ring

  • Install the lock ring by hand first.
  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to tighten it evenly.
  • Torque to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs) unless the replacement module instructions specify a different value.
  • Even tightening helps prevent leaks.

Step 8: Reconnect lines and wiring

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the electrical connector.
  • Check that both connections are fully seated and locked.

Step 9: Reassemble the interior

  • Reinstall the access cover and rear seat parts using the trim panel tool.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

Step 10: Prime and check for leaks

  • Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times.
  • Listen for the fuel pump to prime.
  • Start the engine and inspect the pump area for fuel leaks.

  • Confirm the engine starts cleanly and idles normally.
  • Check again for fuel smell or seepage around the access cover.
  • Test drive the car and verify there are no hesitation or stalling issues.
