  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front seats forward for room at the rear seat cushion.
  • Relieve fuel pressure first by removing the fuel pump fuse or relay and running the engine until it stalls, then crank briefly again.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel tank access area.
  • Have rags ready to catch any spilled fuel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse box.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank the engine for a few seconds more to release remaining pressure.
  • This reduces fuel spray risk.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.

Step 3: Access the fuel pump service panel

  • Remove the rear seat cushion using hand pressure at the front release points.
  • Use a trim panel tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove the access cover fasteners and clips.
  • Lift the access cover away to expose the top of the fuel pump module.

Step 4: Disconnect electrical and fuel connections

  • Use a needle-nose pliers if needed to release retainers.
  • Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  • Use a fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel line from the module.
  • Wrap the line with shop towels to catch any fuel drips.

Step 5: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Clean around the module so dirt cannot fall into the tank.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the proper retaining ring tool to remove the lock ring, if equipped.
  • Lift the pump module straight up and out of the tank.
  • Remove the old seal/O-ring and discard it.

Step 6: Install the new fuel pump module

  • Install the new fuel pump seal / O-ring in the tank opening.
  • Lower the new module into the tank carefully without folding the float arm.
  • Reinstall the lock ring and tighten it securely.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs) if your retaining ring uses a torque spec.

Step 7: Reconnect lines and reassemble

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks fully into place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.
  • Install the access cover and any sealing material.
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion.

Step 8: Restore power and prime the system

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay.
  • Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the fuel system.
  • Start the engine and check for leaks around the access area.

  • Let the engine idle for a few minutes and recheck for fuel odor or wet spots.
  • Inspect the access cover area again after a short test drive.
  • If the engine cranks long or sets a code, scan for fuel pressure or pump circuit faults.
