The fuel pump on your Forte is an in-tank pump module that supplies pressurized fuel to the engine. Replacement is usually done through the access panel under the rear seat, so you typically don’t need to drop the fuel tank.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the fuel door and loosen the gas cap to help vent tank pressure.
  • Plan to work with the tank below 1/2 full to reduce spillage and fumes.
  • Have shop towels and a drain pan ready for small fuel spills.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t touch the terminal.
  • Re-connect the negative cable temporarily using the 10mm socket so you can run the engine for pressure relief.
  • Pull the fuel pump fuse/relay from the under-hood fuse box (refer to the fuse-box lid diagram) using a trim clip remover tool as a gentle prying tool.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls, then crank for 2–3 seconds more to bleed off remaining pressure.
  • Turn ignition OFF, then disconnect the negative battery cable again using the 10mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the rear seat cushion

  • Use the trim clip remover tool to pop the rear seat cushion retainers free (they’re usually push-clips at the front edge of the seat).
  • Lift the cushion up and out, then set it aside on a clean surface.

Step 3: Open the fuel pump access panel

  • Clean the area first with shop towels so dirt can’t fall into the tank opening.
  • Remove the access cover fasteners using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Lift the cover and place a small drain pan under the area as a precaution.

Step 4: Disconnect electrical connector and fuel lines

  • Unplug the pump electrical connector using a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the lock tab if needed.
  • Wrap the line connections with shop towels to catch any fuel.
  • Disconnect the quick-connect fuel lines using the fuel line disconnect pick set (a pick helps release the internal locking fingers without breaking them).
  • Tip: Push line in first, then release.

Step 5: Remove the fuel pump lock ring

  • Mark the current lock ring position with the Phillips #2 screwdriver (light scratch mark on plastic/metal) so you can align it during install.
  • Use the fuel pump module lock ring wrench (specialty) to loosen the lock ring. (This wrench grips the ring evenly to prevent cracking it.)
  • If you don’t have room for the wrench, use a brass drift punch and rubber mallet to tap the ring counterclockwise carefully.

Step 6: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Lift the module up slowly by hand, guiding the float arm (fuel level sender) out without bending it.
  • Keep the bottom of the module over the opening briefly to drain fuel back into the tank, then move it to the small drain pan.
  • Remove the old tank seal O-ring from the tank opening using a small flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 7: Install the new seal and new pump module

  • Install the new O-ring seal by hand, ensuring it sits flat and is not twisted.
  • Apply a very light film of dielectric grease to the O-ring with a gloved finger (nitrile gloves) to help prevent pinching.
  • Lower the new module into the tank, guiding the float arm carefully.
  • Align the module index marks (arrows/lines) to the tank marks before locking it down.

Step 8: Reinstall and tighten the lock ring

  • Thread the lock ring on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using the fuel pump module lock ring wrench (specialty).
  • If using a torque method, use a torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10–100 Nm range) with the proper adapter and Torque to factory specification.
  • Tip: Align ring to your mark.

Step 9: Reconnect fuel lines and electrical connector

  • Reconnect the fuel quick-connect lines by pushing on until they click; gently tug to confirm they’re locked.
  • If your replacement includes new line O-rings, install them using the fuel line disconnect pick set (don’t nick the O-rings).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.

Step 10: Reinstall access cover and rear seat

  • Reinstall the access cover using the Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten screws snugly.
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion by aligning it, then press down firmly to re-engage the clips.

Step 11: Prime the fuel system and check for leaks

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON (do not start) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds; repeat 3 times to prime the pump.
  • Start the engine and inspect the access area for any fuel smell or wetness using safety glasses and a bright ambient light (no hot work light).

  • Let the engine idle for 2–3 minutes and re-check for leaks at the line connections and lock ring area.
  • Take a short 5–10 minute drive, then re-check again for any fuel odor inside the cabin.
  • If the fuel gauge reads incorrectly, the float arm may be binding; re-check module alignment.
