📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Run the fuel level down as low as possible before starting. Less fuel makes the tank much easier to lower.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve fuel pressure at the service port if equipped, or by following the pressure relief procedure in the fuel system.
- Raise the truck safely and support it on jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve pressure and disconnect power
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve fuel system pressure before opening any fuel lines.
- Keep a rag ready for drips.
Step 2: Raise and support the truck
- Use a floor jack and jack stands to raise the truck safely.
- Make sure the truck is stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove the fuel tank skid or shield, if equipped
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove any tank shield fasteners.
- Set the shield aside in the order removed.
Step 4: Disconnect filler neck and vent hoses
- Use a flat blade screwdriver or trim clip tool to loosen hose clamps and retainers.
- Disconnect the filler neck and vent hoses from the tank.
- Mark hose positions first.
Step 5: Disconnect fuel and electrical connections
- Use a fuel line disconnect tool (specialty) to release the fuel supply line.
- Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector by hand.
- Inspect clips and seals for damage.
Step 6: Support and lower the fuel tank
- Use a fuel tank jack or transmission jack under the tank.
- Use a 15mm socket to remove the tank strap bolts.
- Lower the tank slowly and check for anything still attached.
- Tighten tank strap bolts to factory specification.
Step 7: Remove the fuel pump module
- Clean the top of the tank with shop towels before opening it.
- Use a fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to remove the lock ring.
- Lift the fuel pump module straight out of the tank.
- Remove the old seal / O-ring.
- Do not bend the float arm.
Step 8: Install the new fuel pump module
- Install the new seal / O-ring in the tank opening.
- Lower the new fuel pump module straight into place.
- Use the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to lock it down.
- Tighten the lock ring to factory specification.
Step 9: Reinstall the tank
- Raise the tank with the fuel tank jack or transmission jack.
- Reconnect the fuel line and use the fuel line disconnect tool (specialty) only if needed to reseat the connector.
- Reconnect the electrical connector.
- Reattach filler neck and vent hoses.
- Use a 15mm socket to install the tank strap bolts.
- Tighten tank strap bolts to factory specification.
Step 10: Reinstall shields and lower the truck
- Use the correct 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall any shields.
- Lower the truck off the jack stands.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Cycle the key to ON for a few seconds, then OFF, three to four times to prime the system.
- Check carefully for fuel leaks at the tank and line connections.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Verify normal fuel pressure and smooth operation.
- If the check engine light stays on, clear codes and recheck for fuel system faults.
