🔧 NX200t - Fuel Pump Replacement
On your NX200t, the fuel pump is an in-tank electric pump that supplies high-pressure fuel to the engine. Replacement usually involves removing the rear seat cushion, opening the service access panel, then swapping the pump module and seal.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Assumption: pump is accessed under rear seat via service cover.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are highly flammable.
- No smoking, no open flames, no incandescent work lights; use an LED work light.
- Relieve fuel pressure before opening any fuel line to reduce spray risk.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent sparks.
- Keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby and clean spills immediately.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Fuel pump tank seal / O-ring gasket - Qty: 1
- Fuel pump retaining lock ring - Qty: 1
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Lower the fuel level if possible (under 1/4 tank makes the job cleaner and reduces vapor).
- Relieve fuel pressure: remove the fuel pump fuse/relay (commonly labeled F/P or similar), then start the engine and let it run until it stalls; crank 2-3 more seconds to bleed remaining pressure.
- Disconnect battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable and isolate it so it cannot spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear seat cushion
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently pop up the rear seat cushion release points (typically near the front edge of the cushion).
- Lift the cushion out and set it aside.
- Pull straight up to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Open the fuel pump service access cover
- Locate the service cover in the floor under the seat area.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket (varies by cover) to remove the fasteners.
- Lift the cover off, then use shop towels to clean dust/dirt around the pump flange so nothing falls into the tank.
Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines
- Unplug the fuel pump connector by pressing the tab; use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently release the lock.
- Place a fuel-safe drain pan and shop towels under the lines.
- Disconnect the fuel line quick-connect:
- Use a pick tool to remove the safety clip (if equipped).
- Use the fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty) if the connector requires it, then pull the line off.
- Wrap the fitting with a towel before separating.
Step 4: Mark orientation and remove the retaining ring/fasteners
- Use a marker or paint pen to mark the pump module position relative to the tank (helps alignment during install).
- If your NX uses a lock ring:
- Use a brass drift punch (specialty) and small hammer to tap the ring counterclockwise until it releases.
- If your NX uses small bolts/nuts:
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove them in a crisscross pattern.
Step 5: Remove the fuel pump module
- Carefully lift the module straight up; angle it as needed to clear the float arm (fuel level sender).
- Let fuel drain from the module into the tank for a few seconds, then set the module into the fuel-safe drain pan.
- Remove the old tank seal/O-ring from the tank opening using a pick tool (do not scratch sealing surfaces).
Step 6: Install the new seal and fuel pump module
- Lightly coat the new seal with dielectric grease (a thin film) to help it seat without twisting.
- Install the new seal into the tank groove evenly.
- Lower the new pump module into the tank, keeping the float arm from bending, and align to your paint marks.
Step 7: Reinstall and tighten the retaining ring/fasteners
- If your NX uses a lock ring:
- Install the ring and tap it clockwise using the brass drift punch (specialty) and small hammer until fully seated at the stops/marks.
- If your NX uses bolts/nuts:
- Snug all fasteners by hand first using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten in a crisscross pattern with an in-lb torque wrench: Torque to 44 in-lb (5 N·m).
Step 8: Reconnect fuel line(s) and electrical connector
- Push the fuel line on until it clicks; reinstall the safety clip using a pick tool if equipped.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it locks.
- Wipe everything dry with shop towels so leaks are easy to spot later.
Step 9: Reinstall the service cover and rear seat cushion
- Reinstall the service cover fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket.
- If the cover uses small bolts, tighten with an in-lb torque wrench: Torque to 44 in-lb (5 N·m).
- Reinstall the rear seat cushion by aligning hooks/clips, then press down firmly until it clicks in.
Step 10: Restore power and prime the fuel system
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay using your hands or a pick tool if needed.
- Prime: turn ignition to ON (engine off) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds; repeat 3 times to build pressure.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Check for leaks at the fuel line connection and around the pump flange (use a bright LED work light).
- If you have a check engine light after the repair, scan for codes; a loose connector or not-fully-seated line can trigger EVAP/fuel pressure codes.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck for any fuel smell or dampness under the seat access area.
