🔧 Rogue - Fuel Pump Replacement

The fuel pump on your Rogue is inside the fuel tank, under the rear seat. You’ll be lifting the rear seat, removing an access cover, and swapping the pump module while keeping dirt out of the tank.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2–3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a very well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable and harmful to breathe.
  • ⚠️ Keep all sparks, open flames, and smoking materials far from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental sparks and fuel pump activation.
  • ⚠️ Relieve fuel system pressure before opening any fuel lines to avoid fuel spray.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves to protect your eyes and skin.
  • ⚠️ Avoid using incandescent work lights; use LED lighting to reduce ignition risk.
  • ⚠️ Clean the area around the pump opening before removal so dirt does not fall into the tank.

  • 🔩 Fuel pump module O-ring / tank seal - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Fuel pump lock ring (tank retaining ring) - Qty: 1 (recommended)
  • 🔩 Fuel-resistant cleaning wipes or brake cleaner - Qty: 1
  • 🔩 Electrical contact cleaner spray - Qty: 1 (optional)
  • 🔩 Shop towels / absorbent pads - Qty: 1 pack

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the Rogue on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Ideally work with the fuel level at 1/4 tank or less to reduce spills and weight.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Open all doors or windows to maximize ventilation around the work area.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket and move the cable aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Have a metal-free container and rags ready to catch any spilled fuel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel system pressure

  • Locate the interior fuse panel and remove the fuel pump fuse or fuel pump relay. If you are unsure which one, refer to the fuse box cover diagram.
  • With the fuse/relay removed, briefly reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls. This uses the remaining fuel in the rail and relieves pressure.
  • Crank for an additional 3–5 seconds to release any remaining pressure, then turn the key off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal again with the 10mm socket.
  • Do not skip depressurizing; it limits fuel spray.

Step 2: Access the fuel pump under the rear seat

  • Fold the rear seat backs forward to create room.
  • Lift the rear seat bottom cushion: there are front clips holding it down. Use a trim removal tool (plastic) or your hands to sharply pull upward at the front edge on each side to release the clips.
  • Once the front clips are free, tilt the seat cushion upward and slide it out of the vehicle. Set it aside safely.
  • You will see a round metal access cover on the passenger side of the floor, with wires going to it.

Step 3: Remove the fuel pump access cover

  • Use a flathead screwdriver (small) to gently lift the edges of the access cover. Some Rogues use butyl sealer or small screws around the cover.
  • If screws are present, remove them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Carefully peel the cover back to expose the top of the fuel pump module, wiring connector, and fuel lines.
  • Do not pull hard on any wires; they are delicate.

Step 4: Clean the area around the pump

  • Use a vacuum cleaner (for dust only, not fuel) to remove loose dirt and debris around the pump opening.
  • Use shop rags and fuel-safe cleaner to wipe the top of the tank and pump area until it is very clean.
  • Cleanliness is crucial to avoid fuel tank contamination.

Step 5: Disconnect electrical connector and fuel lines

  • Locate the main electrical connector on top of the pump module.
  • Press the locking tab and disconnect it by hand; if stuck, gently help the tab with a flathead screwdriver (small), but do not pry hard.
  • Place shop rags around the fuel line fittings to catch any drips.
  • Use the fuel line quick-disconnect tool set (8–10mm) to release the fuel feed line(s). Slide the tool into the fitting, push the line in slightly, then pull the line off while keeping the tool pressed in.
  • Cap or wrap the open fuel line ends in rags to reduce vapors.

Step 6: Remove the pump lock ring

  • The pump module is held in the tank by a large plastic or metal lock ring.
  • Use the fuel pump lock-ring tool (Nissan in-tank module) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to turn the ring counter-clockwise and loosen it.
  • If you do not have the specialty tool, do not use a metal hammer and screwdriver because of spark risk; obtain the correct tool instead.
  • Lift the lock ring off and set it aside. If damaged or corroded, plan to replace it.
  • Note how the ring and pump are oriented before removal.

Step 7: Remove the fuel pump module from the tank

  • Carefully lift the pump module straight up by its top flange.
  • There will be a float arm for the fuel level sensor; tilt the pump slightly as needed to clear the tank opening without bending the float arm.
  • Allow fuel to drain from the pump back into the tank for a moment before fully removing it.
  • Place the old pump module into a drain pan or fuel-safe container to catch any fuel.
  • Remove the old O-ring or gasket from the tank opening using a plastic scraper if needed; do not scratch the tank surface.

Step 8: Prepare the new fuel pump module

  • Compare the new pump module to the old one: check connector style, fuel line positions, and float arm orientation to ensure it matches.
  • Install any supplied strainer or seal onto the new pump module according to the instructions.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring / tank seal with clean fuel to help it seat and seal.

Step 9: Install the new pump module into the tank

  • Place the new O-ring into the groove on the tank opening, making sure it is flat and not twisted.
  • Lower the new pump module carefully into the tank, guiding the float arm through the opening without bending it.
  • Align any marks or tabs on the pump flange with the marks on the tank (there is usually an arrow or alignment notch).
  • Install the lock ring over the pump flange.
  • Use the fuel pump lock-ring tool (Nissan in-tank module) with the 3/8" drive ratchet to tighten the lock ring clockwise until it aligns with the factory marks.
  • Torque the lock ring to Nissan specification (see service manual) using the torque wrench 5–60 Nm range if your tool setup allows. Do not over-tighten.

Step 10: Reconnect fuel lines and electrical connector

  • Reconnect the fuel line(s) by pushing them firmly onto the pump fittings until you hear or feel a click.
  • Gently tug each line with your hand to confirm it is fully locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector to the pump module until it clicks into place.
  • If needed, spray a small amount of electrical contact cleaner spray on the connector before plugging in to remove corrosion.

Step 11: Reinstall the access cover and rear seat

  • Place the access cover back over the pump opening.
  • If screws were present, reinstall them with the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet and tighten to snug by hand / to Nissan specification using the torque wrench 5–60 Nm range. Do not over-tighten and strip them.
  • Press any sealer edges back down to make a good seal.
  • Slide the rear seat cushion back into place, engage any rear hooks, then press down firmly over the front clip locations until they snap into place.

Step 12: Prime the fuel system and check for leaks

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay in the interior fuse panel.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using the 10mm socket and tighten to Nissan specification (snug, do not overtighten).
  • Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine off) for about 5 seconds to let the pump run and prime the system, then turn it OFF.
  • Repeat this ON–OFF priming cycle 2–3 times.
  • On the final cycle, start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen near the rear seat area for any unusual noises and check under the access cover area (without removing it) and under the vehicle for fuel smells or visible leaks.

Step 13: Final checks

  • Verify the fuel gauge on the dash reads normally and reacts as expected when driving later.
  • Clear any spilled fuel with shop rags and let the area air out thoroughly.
  • Dispose of old fuel, rags, and the old pump according to local hazardous waste rules.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it reach normal operating temperature while idling.
  • Check again for fuel smells or wet spots under the vehicle after a short drive.
  • If you have a scan tool, check for any stored trouble codes and clear them if no issues are present.
  • Over the next few trips, make sure the fuel gauge behaves normally and the engine does not hesitate or stall.
