How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue (Engine: Inline 4 2.5L)

🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement
Assumption: This procedure assumes the fuel pump module is accessed through the rear seat service opening. If your Rogue does not have that access panel, the fuel tank must be lowered.
The fuel pump module supplies fuel to the engine. A failed pump can cause hard starting, stalling, no-start, or loss of power. Work carefully, because fuel vapors are flammable and the system stays pressurized even after shutdown.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area.
- No smoking, sparks, heat guns, or open flames anywhere nearby.
- Relieve fuel pressure before opening the system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the fuel pump.
- Keep a fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids nearby.
- Use non-sparking care around fuel lines and the tank opening.
- Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves.

- Have new seals ready. Do not reuse the old O-ring.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure
- Use the fuel pump relay or fuse method, then crank the engine until it stalls.
- Turn the key off and remove it.
- Catch any pressure before opening lines.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Set the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
Step 3: Remove rear seat access cover
- Lift the rear seat cushion using a flat trim tool if needed.
- Remove the access cover fasteners with the correct 10mm socket or trim tool, depending on the cover style.
- Lift off the service cover to expose the fuel pump module.
Step 4: Disconnect the fuel pump module
- Use a fuel line disconnect tool (specialty) to release the fuel line, if equipped with a quick-connect fitting.
- Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers to release the electrical connector lock, then unplug it.
- Wrap the area with shop towels to catch spills.
Step 5: Remove the fuel pump module
- Use a fuel tank lock ring tool (specialty) if required, or the correct service tool for the retaining ring.
- Turn the lock ring counterclockwise and lift it off.
- Carefully pull the pump module straight up and out of the tank.
- Be careful not to bend the float arm or damage the sending unit.
Step 6: Install the new seal and module
- Clean the tank opening with a lint-free shop towel.
- Install the new fuel pump module seal / O-ring in the groove.
- Lower the new module into the tank in the same orientation as the old one.
- Install the lock ring and tighten it to Torque to manufacturer specification.
- Do not pinch the seal.
Step 7: Reconnect lines and wiring
- Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks into place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector and make sure the lock is fully seated.
- Check that the hoses are routed exactly as before.
Step 8: Reinstall the cover and seat
- Reinstall the service cover.
- Reinstall the rear seat cushion.
- Use the 10mm socket to tighten any removed fasteners to Torque to manufacturer specification.
✅ After Repair
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Cycle the ignition to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF, three times to prime the system.
- Start the engine and check for fuel leaks around the access opening.
- Confirm the fuel gauge reads correctly.
- Road test and make sure the engine starts cleanly and does not stall.
