🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back to the terminal.
- Relieve tank/vapor pressure by loosening the fuel filler cap (at the fuel door) and leaving it loose for now.
- Less pressure = less fuel spray.
Step 2: Remove the rear seat cushion
- From the rear seat area, release the lower seat cushion (you’ll feel it pop free at the front edge).
- Use a trim clip removal tool as needed to help lift without tearing clips.
- Lift the cushion out and set it aside.
Step 3: Open the fuel pump access cover
- Locate the access cover in the floor under the rear seat area.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove the screws, then lift the cover.
- Use shop rags to wipe dust away from the top of the pump module so dirt doesn’t fall into the tank.
Step 4: Disconnect electrical connector(s)
- Press the locking tab and unplug the fuel pump electrical connector by hand.
- If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently on the lock tab (don’t pry on the wires).
Step 5: Disconnect fuel line(s)
- Place a fuel-safe drain pan and shop rags under the connections.
- Disconnect the quick-connect fuel line(s). A “quick-connect” is a fitting with tabs you squeeze to release.
- Use needle-nose pliers only if needed to squeeze tabs—don’t crush the plastic.
- Expect a small amount of fuel to drip; catch it in the pan.
Step 6: Remove the fuel pump module retaining nuts/fasteners
- Use a 10mm socket and 10mm ratchet to remove the retaining nuts/bolts around the module flange.
- Remove them evenly in a crisscross pattern (like a wheel) to prevent warping.
Step 7: Lift out the fuel pump module
- Slowly lift the module straight up. Tilt as needed to clear the opening without bending the float arm.
- Let fuel drain from the module into the tank for a moment, then set the module into the fuel-safe drain pan.
- Move slowly to avoid splashing fuel.
Step 8: Replace the tank seal (O-ring/gasket)
- Remove the old seal from the tank opening.
- Wipe the sealing surface clean with shop rags.
- Install the new seal fully seated and flat (no twists).
Step 9: Install the new fuel pump module
- Lower the new module into the tank, aligning the locator marks/arrow on the flange with the tank opening.
- Install the retaining nuts/bolts finger-tight first.
- Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench (5–25 Nm range) to tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern: Torque to 4.4 Nm (3.2 ft-lbs).
- A torque wrench is a tool that tightens to an exact setting so you don’t crack the flange or cause leaks.
Step 10: Reconnect fuel line(s) and electrical connector(s)
- Reconnect the quick-connect fuel line(s) until you hear/feel a click.
- Gently tug-test the line by hand to confirm it’s locked.
- Plug in the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 11: Close the access cover and reinstall the rear seat cushion
- Reinstall the access cover and tighten the screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Reinstall the seat cushion and push down at the front edge until it snaps into place.
Step 12: Reconnect battery and prime the system
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Turn the key to ON (do not start) for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2–3 times to prime the fuel system.
- Tighten the fuel filler cap.

- 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes while checking for fuel smell or seepage at the pump flange and line connections.
