🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement

Assumption: this is the in-tank fuel pump module replacement on your CX-5. The fuel pump sits inside the fuel tank, so the job involves depressurizing the fuel system, removing the rear seat access area if equipped, and swapping the pump module carefully to avoid fuel leaks and damaged seals.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Fuel vapors are flammable.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Do not smoke, weld, or create sparks near the vehicle.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher rated for fuel fires nearby.
  • Relieve fuel pressure before opening any fuel lines.
  • Use a jack and jack stands only if the tank strap access requires lifting; never rely on the jack alone.
  • Wipe up fuel spills immediately and dispose of rags safely.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat trim tool
  • Fuel line disconnect tool (specialty)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop rags
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

  • Fuel tank access cover seal or gasket - Qty: 1
  • Fuel line clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Fuel filter sock - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel level as low as practical before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait a few minutes before opening the fuel system.
  • Have a container ready for any fuel drips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Depressurize the fuel system

  • Use the fuel pump relay/fuse method or an approved scan-tool procedure if available for your CX-5.
  • Crank the engine until it stalls, then key off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.

Step 2: Access the fuel pump

  • Remove the rear seat cushion or cargo floor access panel if your CX-5 has an in-cabin pump access opening.
  • Use the flat trim tool to lift clips without cracking the trim.
  • Remove the access cover screws with the 8mm socket if equipped.

Step 3: Disconnect the pump module

  • Clean the area around the pump module before opening it. Dirt must not fall into the tank.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight off.
  • Use the fuel line disconnect tool to separate the fuel supply line.
  • Move slowly. A small amount of fuel spill is normal.

Step 4: Remove the fuel pump lock ring

  • Mark the pump module position first so it goes back in the same orientation.
  • Use the specialty lock ring tool if available, or the approved service method for the retaining ring.
  • Lift the pump module straight up and out of the tank.
  • Do not bend the float arm.

Step 5: Install the new pump module

  • Transfer any needed parts from the old unit only if the replacement does not include them.
  • Install the new fuel pump module seal/O-ring and make sure it sits flat.
  • Lower the new module into the tank carefully and align it with your mark.
  • Install the lock ring and tighten to the factory specification for your CX-5 pump retaining ring. If the ring uses a torque value in your service data, use that exact spec.

Step 6: Reconnect lines and reassemble

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks fully locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.
  • Install the access cover and tighten screws snugly with the 8mm socket.
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion or trim panels.

Step 7: Prime and check for leaks

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.
  • Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the system.
  • Start the engine and inspect the pump area and fuel line connections for leaks.

✅ After Repair

  • Let the engine idle and recheck for fuel smell or seepage.
  • Take a short road test and confirm normal acceleration and no warning lights.
  • If the check engine light was on before repair, clear codes with a scan tool and verify they do not return.
  • Recheck the access cover and lines after the first drive.
