🔧 CX-5 - Fuel Pump Replacement

On your CX-5, the fuel pump is an in-tank module that you can access from inside the vehicle under the rear seat. The job is mainly about safely relieving fuel pressure, opening the access cover, and swapping the pump module and seal without letting dirt fall into the tank.

  • ⚠️ Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ No smoking, no heaters, no drop lights with hot bulbs, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • ⚠️ Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel line to prevent fuel spray.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid sparks.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the tank; clean the area before opening the pump.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the fuel door to reduce tank pressure.
  • Try to work with the tank below 1/2 full; it makes the module easier to handle with less spill risk.
  • Relieve fuel pressure: remove the FUEL PUMP fuse/relay from the under-hood fuse box, then start the engine and let it run until it stalls; crank 2-3 seconds more, then turn key OFF.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the fuel pump service cover

  • Move the front seats forward for room.
  • Lift the rear seat bottom cushion (it’s held by clips). Use a trim removal tool to pop the front edge up.
  • Locate the round/oval service cover in the floor area under the seat.

Step 2: Clean the area (very important)

  • Use a handheld vacuum to remove loose dirt around the cover.
  • Wipe the top of the service area with shop towels. Cleanliness prevents tank contamination.

Step 3: Remove the service cover

  • Remove any cover fasteners using a 10mm socket (if equipped) or gently pry the cover up using a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get dirty.

Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Press the connector lock tab and unplug it by hand; use needle-nose pliers only if the tab is stubborn.

Step 5: Disconnect the fuel line

  • Place shop towels around the connection to catch fuel.
  • Release the quick-connect fitting (squeeze the tabs by hand or with needle-nose pliers), then pull the line straight off.
  • If it won’t release, gently assist with a flat-blade screwdriver on the tabs (do not pry the line sideways).

Step 6: Remove the pump locking ring

  • Mark the current position: use a flat-blade screwdriver to make a small reference mark between the ring and tank (or use a paint pen if you have one).
  • Use a brass drift punch and small hammer to tap the locking ring counterclockwise until it releases.
  • A brass drift is a softer metal punch that helps reduce spark risk versus steel. Tap gently; don’t crack the ring.

Step 7: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Lift the module straight up slowly by hand.
  • Angle it as needed to clear the float arm (fuel level sender) without bending it.
  • Let fuel drain from the module into the tank for a few seconds, then set the module on shop absorbent pads.

Step 8: Replace the tank seal O-ring

  • Remove the old seal from the tank opening by hand; use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully if it’s stuck.
  • Clean the seal groove with shop towels.
  • Install the new O-ring seal, fully seated and not twisted.

Step 9: Install the new fuel pump module

  • Transfer any required items (only if your new module doesn’t include them), such as the fuel pump strainer, by hand and with needle-nose pliers as needed.
  • Lower the new module into the tank, guiding the float arm carefully.
  • Align the module orientation marks to the tank marks (your reference mark helps).

Step 10: Reinstall and tighten the locking ring

  • Install the locking ring and start it by hand.
  • Use the brass drift punch and small hammer to tap it clockwise until the ring alignment marks line up with the tank marks.
  • If your ring uses bolts instead of a tap ring (some replacements do), tighten evenly with a 10mm socket and finish with a torque wrench (3/8") to the specification provided with the module.

Step 11: Reconnect the fuel line and connector

  • Push the fuel line on until it clicks; tug lightly by hand to confirm it’s locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 12: Reinstall the service cover and rear seat

  • Reinstall the cover and any fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Snap the rear seat bottom cushion back into place by pushing down firmly.

Step 13: Restore power and prime the system

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay by hand.
  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Prime: turn key to ON (not start) for 5 seconds, then OFF; repeat 3 times to build fuel pressure.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • Check for fuel smell and visually inspect the pump top and fuel line area for seepage.
  • Take a short test drive, then re-check for leaks again.
  • If you have a check engine light related to fuel pressure, clear codes with a scan tool and confirm they don’t return.
