🔧 Altima - Fuel Pump Module Replacement

The fuel pump on your Altima is part of an in-tank fuel pump module located under the rear seat area. Replacing it means depressurizing the fuel system, removing the rear seat cushion, opening the fuel pump access cover, and replacing the module with a new seal.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔥 Gasoline vapors are extremely flammable. Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area.
  • 🚭 Do not smoke, use a lighter, or create sparks near the vehicle.
  • ⚡ Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel tank.
  • 🧯 Keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby. Class B means it is rated for flammable liquids like gasoline.
  • 👓 Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves because fuel may spray or drip during line removal.
  • 🧼 Wipe spills immediately and dispose of fuel-soaked rags safely outdoors.
  • ⚠️ The plastic fuel pump lock ring can crack if forced. Use the correct fuel tank lock ring tool if available.

  • Fuel pump lock ring - Qty: 1
  • Fuel line retaining clip - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Altima on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • ⛽ Run the fuel tank as low as safely possible before the repair. Less fuel means less vapor and less mess.
  • 🌬️ Open all doors and work in a well-ventilated area.
  • 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • 🧯 Place a Class B fire extinguisher within arm’s reach before opening the fuel tank.
  • 📌 A lock ring is the large retaining ring that clamps the fuel pump module to the tank.
  • 📌 An O-ring is a round rubber seal that prevents fuel vapors and leaks around the pump opening.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • Use the 10mm socket to loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Open the fuel filler door and loosen the gas cap by hand to release tank vapor pressure.
  • Place shop towels around the fuel line connection area under the rear seat before disconnecting it later.
  • Work slowly around fuel fittings.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Seat Bottom Cushion

  • Use your hands to pull upward sharply at the front edge of the rear seat cushion to release the two front retaining clips.
  • If needed, use a plastic trim removal tool to help lift the cushion without scratching trim.
  • Lift the cushion up and remove it from the cabin.
  • Set it aside in a clean, dry place.

Step 3: Remove the Fuel Pump Access Cover

  • Locate the round metal access cover in the floor under the rear seat area.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to remove the access cover bolts.
  • Lift the cover carefully and move any attached wiring aside without pulling on it.
  • Clean loose dirt around the pump opening with shop towels before opening the tank.

Step 4: Disconnect the Fuel Pump Electrical Connector

  • Press the locking tab on the fuel pump electrical connector by hand.
  • If the tab is tight, gently press it with a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch.
  • Pull the connector straight off the fuel pump module.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 5: Disconnect the Fuel Line

  • Place shop towels under and around the fuel line connection.
  • Use fuel line disconnect pliers to release the quick-connect fuel line fitting. A quick-connect fitting is a push-lock fuel connector with an internal retaining clip.
  • Pull the fuel line straight off the pump outlet.
  • Catch any dripping fuel with a fuel-safe drain pan.
  • Inspect the retaining clip and replace it if damaged.

Step 6: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

  • Fit the fuel tank lock ring tool onto the lock ring tabs.
  • Use the ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to turn the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
  • If you do not have the lock ring tool, use a brass punch 8-inch and rubber mallet 16-ounce to tap the ring counterclockwise carefully.
  • Do not use a steel punch because it can create sparks.
  • Remove the lock ring and set it aside if replacing it.

Step 7: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

  • Lift the fuel pump module straight upward by hand.
  • Tilt it slightly as needed to clear the fuel level float arm. The float arm measures fuel level for the gauge.
  • Keep shop towels underneath the module as you remove it because fuel will drip.
  • Place the old module into a fuel-safe drain pan.
  • Remove the old tank seal/O-ring by hand or with needle-nose pliers 6-inch.

Step 8: Install the New Tank Seal

  • Wipe the tank sealing surface with clean shop towels.
  • Install the new fuel pump tank seal/O-ring by hand into the groove on the tank opening.
  • Make sure the seal sits flat all the way around.
  • Do not reuse the old seal.

Step 9: Install the New Fuel Pump Module

  • Lower the new fuel pump module assembly into the tank by hand.
  • Guide the float arm in gently so it does not bend.
  • Align the module marks with the tank marks exactly as the old pump was positioned.
  • Hold the module down evenly while installing the lock ring.

Step 10: Install and Tighten the Lock Ring

  • Place the new fuel pump lock ring over the module.
  • Use the fuel tank lock ring tool and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to turn the lock ring clockwise until fully seated against the stop tabs.
  • If using a brass punch 8-inch and rubber mallet 16-ounce, tap the ring clockwise gently and evenly.
  • Make sure the ring is fully locked and the module does not lift up.
  • Torque to the lock-ring seated stop position; do not overdrive the plastic tank tabs.

Step 11: Reconnect the Fuel Line and Electrical Connector

  • Push the fuel line straight onto the pump outlet by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently pull back on the line by hand to confirm it is locked.
  • Install the new fuel line retaining clip if the old clip was removed or damaged.
  • Reconnect the fuel pump electrical connector by hand until it clicks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery and Prime the System

  • Use the 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine for 5 seconds, then turn it OFF.
  • Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3 times to prime the fuel system.
  • Priming means the pump fills the fuel line with pressure before starting.

Step 13: Check for Leaks Before Reassembly

  • Use a flashlight if available, but do not use a lighter or open flame.
  • Look closely around the fuel line fitting and pump seal area.
  • Use shop towels to check for damp fuel around the connection.
  • If you see or smell a strong fuel leak, turn the ignition OFF immediately and recheck the seal, lock ring, and fuel line connection.

Step 14: Reinstall the Access Cover and Rear Seat

  • Place the access cover back over the fuel pump opening.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to install the cover bolts.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion by sliding the rear hooks into place first.
  • Push down firmly on the front of the cushion by hand until both retaining clips snap in.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Altima and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • 👃 Check carefully for fuel smell inside and outside the cabin.
  • 🔍 Inspect the access area again for dampness before driving.
  • 🚗 Take a short test drive, then recheck for leaks one more time.
  • ⛽ Confirm the fuel gauge reads normally after the repair.
  • ⚠️ If the engine cranks but does not start, cycle the ignition ON/OFF a few more times and recheck the electrical connector.
