🔧 Escape - Fuel Pump Replacement

On your Escape, the in-tank electric fuel pump is part of the fuel pump module inside the fuel tank. Replacing it requires safely lowering the fuel tank, disconnecting the fuel lines and electrical connector, then removing the pump module from the tank.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Gasoline is extremely flammable. Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area, away from sparks, cigarettes, heaters, and open flames.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
  • ⚠️ Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting fuel lines. Fuel pressure means gasoline is held under pressure in the lines after the engine is shut off.
  • ⚠️ Support the fuel tank with a floor jack before removing tank straps. A partially full tank is heavy and unstable.
  • ⚠️ Do not use power tools near open fuel vapors.
  • ⚠️ Replace the fuel pump module seal. Reusing the old seal can cause fuel leaks or fuel smell.

  • Fuel pump module lock ring - Qty: 1
  • Fuel-safe cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel level as low as safely possible before starting. A lighter tank is much easier to handle.
  • Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels.
  • Open the fuel door and remove the fuel cap to release tank vapor pressure.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • A fuel line disconnect tool releases spring-style fuel fittings without breaking the plastic connector.
  • A fuel pump lock ring tool turns the large retaining ring that holds the pump module in the tank.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • Remove the fuel pump relay or fuse from the under-hood fuse box using the fuse layout on the fuse box cover.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank the engine for 3-5 seconds using the ignition key to remove leftover pressure.
  • Turn the ignition off.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Keep towels ready for fuel drips.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear of the Vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
  • Use a floor jack at the correct rear lift point to raise the rear of your Escape.
  • Set the vehicle securely on jack stands.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before working underneath.

Step 3: Remove Underbody Shields if Equipped

  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove any rear underbody shield fasteners blocking the fuel tank area.
  • Lower the shield by hand and set it aside.
  • Keep the fasteners grouped so they go back in the same locations.

Step 4: Support the Fuel Tank

  • Place a wide wood block or transmission jack adapter on the floor jack.
  • Raise the jack until it lightly supports the bottom of the fuel tank.
  • Do not crush the tank. It only needs light support at this point.

Step 5: Disconnect Fuel Filler and Vent Connections

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the fuel filler hose clamp if equipped.
  • Use a fuel line disconnect tool set to release quick-connect vapor or fuel fittings at the tank.
  • Push each connector inward first, then release it with the tool, then pull it straight off.
  • Place shop towels under fittings to catch small fuel drips.
  • Do not pry plastic fittings sideways.

Step 6: Disconnect Fuel Tank Electrical Connectors

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver gently to unlock the electrical connector tabs.
  • Disconnect the fuel pump module connector and any nearby tank harness clips.
  • Move the wiring aside so it will not stretch when the tank is lowered.

Step 7: Remove Fuel Tank Strap Bolts

  • Confirm the tank is supported by the floor jack.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet and 3/8-inch extension to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
  • Lower the straps away from the tank.
  • On installation, tighten the fuel tank strap bolts to Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Lower the Fuel Tank

  • Slowly lower the floor jack a few inches at a time.
  • Watch for any fuel lines, vapor hoses, or electrical connectors still attached.
  • Stop immediately if anything becomes tight, then disconnect it before lowering further.
  • Lower the tank enough to access the fuel pump module on top of the tank.

Step 9: Clean Around the Fuel Pump Module

  • Use fuel-safe cleaner and shop towels to clean dirt from around the fuel pump module.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the tank opening.
  • This step protects the new pump and fuel injectors from contamination.

Step 10: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring tool to turn the lock ring counterclockwise.
  • If needed, use a brass punch and dead-blow hammer lightly on the lock ring tabs.
  • Do not use a steel punch. Steel can spark near fuel vapor.
  • Lift the lock ring off and set it aside if you are comparing it to the new one.

Step 11: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

  • Lift the fuel pump module straight up by hand.
  • Tilt it slightly to clear the float arm. The float arm is the small lever that measures fuel level.
  • Let fuel drain from the module into a fuel-safe drain pan.
  • Remove and discard the old tank seal.

Step 12: Install the New Fuel Pump Module

  • Wipe the tank sealing surface with shop towels.
  • Place the new fuel pump module tank seal into position.
  • Lower the new fuel pump module assembly into the tank by hand.
  • Guide the float arm in carefully so it does not bend.
  • Align the module marks with the tank marks.

Step 13: Install the New Lock Ring

  • Install the new fuel pump module lock ring by hand first.
  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to turn the lock ring clockwise until fully seated against the tank stops.
  • If using a brass punch and dead-blow hammer, tap lightly and evenly.
  • Make sure the seal does not pinch or squeeze out.

Step 14: Raise and Reconnect the Fuel Tank

  • Use the floor jack to raise the fuel tank slowly.
  • Reconnect the fuel pump electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Reconnect fuel and vapor line quick-connect fittings by hand until each one clicks.
  • Gently pull each connector back by hand to confirm it is locked.

Step 15: Reinstall Fuel Tank Straps

  • Position the fuel tank straps by hand.
  • Start all strap bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the bolts.
  • Tighten fuel tank strap bolts to Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Reinstall Filler Hose and Shields

  • Reconnect the filler hose and vent hose by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the hose clamp if equipped.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall the underbody shield fasteners.
  • Tighten small shield fasteners snug only. Do not strip them.

Step 17: Reconnect Battery and Prime the Fuel System

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3 times to fill the fuel lines.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ With the engine idling, check under the vehicle for fuel leaks or fuel smell.
  • ✅ If any leak is found, shut the engine off immediately and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • ✅ Confirm the fuel gauge reads normally after adding fuel.
  • ✅ Road test gently for 5-10 minutes, then recheck for leaks.
  • ✅ Clear any stored fuel pump or fuel pressure codes if a scan tool is available.
