🔧 RDX - Fuel Pump Replacement

The fuel pump on your RDX is an in-tank module that’s serviced from inside the cabin (usually under the rear seat) so you don’t have to drop the fuel tank. The job is mostly about working cleanly, relieving fuel pressure safely, and sealing the pump module correctly to prevent leaks and fuel smells.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: your RDX has a rear-seat service access cover (common setup).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, heaters, or smoking.
  • ⚠️ Fuel is under pressure; relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any lines.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to reduce spark risk.
  • ⚠️ Keep a class B fire extinguisher nearby and wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Do not use steel chisels on the pump lock ring; use a non-sparking tool.
  • ⚠️ Replace the pump seal/O-ring any time the module is removed.

  • Catch pan
  • Vacuum or compressed air blow gun
  • Marker paint pen

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel pump module assembly - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump module seal/O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump strainer (sock filter) - Qty: 1
  • Fuel line retaining clips (if damaged) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and open the driver window (helps if the battery is disconnected).
  • Use a vacuum or compressed air blow gun to remove dirt around the service area so debris doesn’t fall into the tank.
  • Relieve fuel pressure before opening the fuel system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Open the under-hood fuse/relay box and remove the fuel pump fuse/relay using needle-nose pliers.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank the engine for 3–5 seconds to bleed off remaining pressure, then turn ignition OFF.
  • This reduces spray when lines are opened.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable and position it so it can’t spring back.

Step 3: Remove the rear seat cushion (access the pump)

  • Move the front seats forward for room.
  • Use a trim removal tool set to release the rear seat cushion clips, then lift the cushion out.
  • Locate the fuel pump service cover in the floor and remove it using a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket (fastener type may vary).

Step 4: Clean and mark the fuel pump module position

  • Use a vacuum or compressed air blow gun to clean all dirt around the pump flange.
  • Use a marker paint pen to mark alignment between the tank and the pump module.
  • Keeping alignment helps the float read correctly.

Step 5: Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines

  • Unplug the pump electrical connector by releasing the lock tab with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Wrap connections with shop towels to catch fuel.
  • Disconnect the fuel line quick-connect fitting (a connector that locks onto the line with internal clips) using a fuel line quick-disconnect tool set (specialty) if needed.
  • Pull the line straight off—do not twist aggressively.

Step 6: Remove the pump lock ring

  • The lock ring is the threaded/locking collar that clamps the pump module to the tank opening.
  • Use a fuel pump lock ring wrench (specialty) to loosen and remove the lock ring.
  • If you don’t have the lock ring wrench, use a brass punch and small hammer to tap the ring counterclockwise carefully. Do not use a steel punch.

Step 7: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Lift the module slowly out of the tank while guiding hoses/wiring.
  • Angle the module as needed so the fuel level float clears the opening.
  • Let fuel drain into a catch pan.
  • Remove and discard the old seal/O-ring.

Step 8: Install the new seal and new pump module

  • Install the new fuel pump module seal/O-ring in the tank groove (do not reuse the old one).
  • Carefully lower the new fuel pump module into the tank, keeping the float from bending.
  • Align the module with the paint marks you made.
  • A pinched seal will cause fuel odor/leaks.

Step 9: Reinstall and tighten the lock ring

  • Thread/install the lock ring by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using the fuel pump lock ring wrench (specialty) until the ring is fully seated and alignment marks are correct.
  • Torque to factory specification (Acura service manual spec for your pump lock ring) using a torque wrench (5–60 Nm range) if your lock ring tool supports torqueing.

Step 10: Reconnect fuel line(s) and electrical connector

  • Push the fuel quick-connect on until it clicks, then pull back gently to confirm it’s locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall the service cover and rear seat

  • Reinstall the service cover and tighten fasteners with a 10mm socket or Phillips screwdriver.
  • Torque to factory specification using a torque wrench (5–60 Nm range) if bolts are used.
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion by hooking it in place and pressing down to engage the clips.

Step 12: Restore power and prime the system

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay in the under-hood fuse/relay box using needle-nose pliers.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON (engine OFF) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds. Repeat 3 times to prime the fuel system.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes while you check for fuel leaks at the pump top and fuel line connection.
  • Sniff around the rear seat area; there should be no raw-fuel smell once sealed.
  • If the check engine light is on, scan and clear codes (a scan tool may be needed if low fuel pressure codes set).
  • Road test for 10–15 minutes, then re-check for leaks.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹18,000-₹45,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹12,000-₹35,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹6,000-₹10,000+ by doing it yourself!

Panipat-area labor rates vary, but shops typically charge ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-4 hours.
