🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement

The fuel pump on your Camry is inside the fuel tank and is usually accessed from under the rear seat area, not from under the car. This job involves fuel vapors and gasoline, so cleanliness and safety matter a lot.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames, and anything that can ignite fuel vapors.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
  • Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Do not reuse damaged hose clips or O-rings.
  • Fuel may spill when the pump module is removed, so wear gloves and safety glasses.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extensions
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Fuel line disconnect tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Plastic scraper
  • Shop towels
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Fire extinguisher

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel pump module - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump module seal / O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Fuel filter strainer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel level low if possible; a near-empty tank is much easier to handle.
  • Open the fuel cap to relieve tank vapor pressure, then close it again.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disable electrical power

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Wait a few minutes before touching any fuel system parts.

Step 2: Remove rear seat cushion

  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to release the rear seat cushion retaining points.
  • Lift the seat cushion out and set it aside.
  • Pull straight up to avoid breaking clips.

Step 3: Access the fuel pump cover

  • Remove the service cover fasteners with a 10mm socket if equipped.
  • Lift off the access cover to expose the fuel pump module.

Step 4: Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect lines

  • Use a fuel line disconnect tool to release the fuel line from the module.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the pump.
  • Place shop towels around the opening to catch spills.

Step 5: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Clean the area around the lock ring with a plastic scraper and shop towels.
  • Remove the lock ring carefully.
  • Lift the fuel pump module out slowly and tilt it as needed to clear the tank opening.
  • Keep dirt out of the tank.

Step 6: Replace the seal and pump assembly

  • Remove the old seal/O-ring and install the new one.
  • If replacing the full module, transfer any required parts only if the new assembly does not include them.
  • Install the new fuel pump module into the tank carefully.

Step 7: Reinstall the lock ring and reconnect

  • Reinstall the lock ring and tighten it evenly.
  • Reconnect the fuel line and electrical connector.
  • Reinstall the service cover and rear seat cushion.
  • Reinstall any removed fasteners with a 10mm socket.

Step 8: Restore power and verify operation

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Cycle the ignition to ON for a few seconds, then OFF, several times to prime the fuel system.
  • Start the engine and check carefully for fuel leaks.
  • Torque to manufacturer specification for any removed fuel pump lock ring or cover fasteners if torque values are supplied with the replacement part instructions.

✅ After Repair

  • Let the engine idle and inspect around the fuel pump area and fuel line connection for leaks.
  • Drive the car a short distance and recheck for fuel smell or warning lights.
  • If the engine runs rough at first, cycle the key again to fully prime the system.
