🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement

The fuel pump on your Equinox is inside the fuel tank. This job usually means lowering the fuel tank, disconnecting the pump module, and installing a new module with a fresh seal. Fuel system pressure and gasoline fumes make this a careful, safety-first repair.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Gasoline vapors are flammable.
  • Relieve fuel pressure before opening any fuel line.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Support the fuel tank with a jack and a wide wood block before removing straps.
  • Keep sparks, cigarettes, hot lights, and power tools away from the work area.
  • Do not reuse a damaged pump seal or lock ring.
  • If your Equinox has rusted tank straps or lines, stop and inspect before proceeding.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wood block
  • Fuel line disconnect tool set
  • Ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Torque wrench
  • Fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty)
  • Drain pan
  • Shop towels
  • Handheld fuel pressure gauge

  • Fuel filter sock - Qty: 1
  • Fuel line O-rings - Qty: 1 set
  • Fuel tank strap hardware - Qty: 1 set
  • Fuel - Qty: enough to refill tank

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the tank as low as safely possible before starting. A lighter tank is easier to lower.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait a few minutes.
  • Relieve fuel pressure at the service port or by disabling fuel delivery and cranking briefly, if equipped.
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel system pressure

  • Use the fuel pressure gauge or service procedure to relieve pressure from the fuel system.
  • Wrap the connection with a shop towel before disconnecting anything.
  • Keep your face away from the line.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use the 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and reconnect.

Step 3: Raise and support the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack and jack stands to safely lift and support the Equinox.
  • Place the jack stands at approved lift points.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable before crawling under it.

Step 4: Remove the fuel tank shield and related underbody parts

  • Use the 10mm socket, 13mm socket, and trim clip removal tool to remove any shields or splash panels blocking the tank.
  • Set all hardware aside in order.

Step 5: Disconnect the filler neck and tank connections

  • Use the flat blade screwdriver and trim clip removal tool to loosen any hose retainers or shields around the filler neck.
  • Disconnect the vapor lines and electrical connectors on top of the tank.
  • Use the fuel line disconnect tool set for the quick-connect fuel and vapor fittings.
  • Label each line if needed.

Step 6: Support and lower the fuel tank

  • Use the floor jack with a wood block to support the fuel tank evenly.
  • Remove the tank strap bolts with the 15mm socket.
  • Lower the tank slowly and check for any missed connectors or hoses.

Step 7: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Clean the top of the tank area so dirt cannot fall inside.
  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) or a suitable lock-ring tool to remove the retaining ring.
  • Lift the fuel pump module straight out of the tank.
  • Remove the old seal and inspect the tank opening for damage.

Step 8: Install the new fuel pump module

  • Install the new fuel pump seal / tank gasket in the correct groove.
  • Lower the new fuel pump module into the tank carefully.
  • Install the lock ring and tighten it to factory specification.
  • Reconnect any internal hoses or clips exactly as removed.

Step 9: Reinstall the fuel tank

  • Raise the tank with the floor jack and wood block.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors, vapor lines, and fuel lines.
  • Use the 15mm socket to reinstall the tank straps.
  • Tighten the strap bolts to factory specification.

Step 10: Reinstall shields and reconnect the battery

  • Use the 10mm socket and 13mm socket to reinstall shields and brackets.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.

Step 11: Prime and check for leaks

  • Turn the key to ON for a few seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the system.
  • Inspect the tank, lines, and module top for leaks.
  • Start the engine and let it idle while checking again for fuel odor or wet spots.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm normal idle and throttle response.
  • Check for fuel leaks at the tank, lines, and pump module.
  • Clear any fuel system codes with a scan tool if needed.
  • Test-drive the vehicle and recheck for leaks afterward.
