🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement
Your fuel pump is inside the fuel tank on your Ram. Replacing it means safely relieving fuel pressure, lowering the tank or lifting the bed, then swapping the pump module and seal. This is a medium-difficulty job because of the fuel vapors, tank weight, and limited access.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area. Fuel vapor is flammable.
- Keep all sparks, cigarettes, heaters, and work lights away from the truck.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel line.
- Use a proper jack and jack stands if lowering the tank. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Fuel is heavy. A nearly full tank can be dangerous to lower.
- Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Run the fuel level down as low as safely possible before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve fuel system pressure before opening any fuel line.
- Use Fuel Tank Access only if your truck has a service opening; most of these trucks require tank removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure
- Use the fuel pump relay/fuse method if equipped, then crank the engine until it stalls.
- Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Have rags ready for fuel drips.
Step 2: Reduce fuel level
- If the tank is more than about one-quarter full, use a fuel siphon pump to remove fuel into an approved container.
- Lower fuel level makes the tank much safer and easier to handle.
Step 3: Raise and support the truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum and support the truck with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Make sure the truck is stable before working underneath it.
Step 4: Support and lower the fuel tank
- Place a transmission jack or jack pad under the tank.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet with the correct sockets to remove the tank strap bolts.
- Lower the tank a little at a time and check for any wires, vent hoses, or fuel lines still attached.
- Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines using a fuel line disconnect tool.
- Lower the tank fully and move it out from under the truck.
Step 5: Remove the fuel pump module
- Clean the top of the tank area with compressed air or a brush before opening it.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the correct retaining ring tool to remove the lock ring.
- Lift the fuel pump module straight out of the tank.
- Remove the old seal and keep dirt out of the tank opening.
Step 6: Install the new module
- Install the new fuel pump module seal in the tank opening.
- Lower the new pump module into position carefully so the float arm is not bent.
- Install the lock ring and tighten it evenly with the correct tool.
- Torque to manufacturer specification for the fuel pump lock ring.
- Do not pinch the seal.
Step 7: Reinstall the tank
- Raise the tank slowly with the transmission jack or jack pad.
- Reconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall and tighten the tank straps.
- Torque to manufacturer specification for the tank strap bolts.
Step 8: Restore power and prime the system
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 3 to 4 times to prime the fuel system.
- Check underneath for fuel leaks before starting the engine.
Step 9: Verify operation
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Check for hard starting, fuel leaks, and normal fuel pressure behavior.
- If the engine will not start, recheck electrical connectors, fuse, relay, and fuel line seating.
✅ After Repair
- Inspect the tank area again after the first drive.
- Check for fuel odor or dampness around the pump module and lines.
- If the check engine light is on, scan for codes and clear them after confirming the repair.
- Top off fuel only after the system proves leak-free.
