📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel level as low as safely possible before starting. Less fuel makes the tank easier and safer to handle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Let the engine cool completely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Use the fuel pump fuse or relay method if accessible, then crank the engine briefly until it stalls.
  • Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Take your time here.

Step 2: Access the fuel pump module

  • Fold or remove the rear seat bottom as needed using a trim panel tool.
  • Lift the service cover to expose the fuel pump access area.
  • Clean around the cover before opening it so dirt does not fall into the tank.

Step 3: Disconnect electrical and fuel connections

  • Unplug the fuel pump electrical connector by hand.
  • Use the fuel line disconnect tool to remove the fuel line from the module.
  • Have a drain pan and shop towels ready for fuel drips.

Step 4: Remove the lock ring and pump module

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver and pliers only if needed to carefully release the lock ring.
  • Lift the pump module straight out slowly so the float arm does not bend.
  • Remove the old seal and discard it.

Step 5: Install the new pump module

  • Transfer any needed parts from the old module only if the new assembly does not include them.
  • Install the new fuel pump module seal in the groove.
  • Set the new module into the tank in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the lock ring and tighten it evenly. Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect lines and reassemble

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks into place.
  • Plug in the electrical connector.
  • Reinstall the service cover and rear seat parts.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.

Step 7: Prime and check for leaks

  • Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the system.
  • Start the engine and inspect the fuel pump area and fuel line connection for leaks.
  • If the engine does not start right away, check the connector and fuel line engagement.

  • Let the engine idle for a few minutes and recheck for fuel leaks.
  • Confirm the fuel gauge works normally.
  • Test drive gently and verify there is no hesitation or stalling.
