🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement

The fuel pump in your Corolla sits in the fuel tank and is usually serviced from under the rear seat through an access cover. You’ll be relieving fuel pressure, opening the tank access panel, and swapping the pump module carefully to avoid fuel leaks or damage to the seal.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Gasoline vapors are flammable.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
  • Do not smoke, weld, or use open flames near the car.
  • Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher rated for fuel fires nearby.
  • Clean dirt from around the pump opening before removal so debris does not fall into the tank.
  • Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Flat trim tool
  • Fuel line disconnect tool
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Large brass drift or fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty)
  • Small pick tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Fire extinguisher

  • Fuel pump lock ring - Qty: 1
  • Fuel line O-rings - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Keep the fuel tank as close to empty as possible before starting. A lighter tank is safer and easier to work with.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
  • Relieve fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump relay or fuse, starting the engine, and letting it stall, then crank for a few seconds more.
  • Wait a few minutes after pressure relief before disconnecting lines.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery and relieve fuel pressure

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Remove the fuel pump relay or fuel pump fuse, then start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank the engine for 3 to 5 seconds more to release leftover pressure.

Step 2: Remove rear seat cushion

  • Use your hands to lift the front edge of the rear seat cushion and release the retaining clips.
  • If needed, use a flat trim tool to help release the clips without tearing the seat cover.
  • Set the cushion aside in a clean area.

Step 3: Remove fuel pump access cover

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver or 10mm socket to remove the access cover fasteners, depending on build variation.
  • Lift the cover off carefully and keep the screws organized.
  • Clean the area around the top of the pump module with shop towels.

Step 4: Disconnect wiring and fuel lines

  • Use your fingers to release the electrical connector lock and unplug the fuel pump connector.
  • Use the fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel line.
  • Wrap the line with shop towels to catch any fuel drips.

Step 5: Remove lock ring and pump module

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) or a large brass drift and light hammer taps to turn the lock ring counterclockwise.
  • Lift the lock ring off and set it aside.
  • Carefully lift the fuel pump module straight up and out of the tank. Tilt it slowly to clear the float arm.
  • Keep dirt out of the tank.

Step 6: Transfer parts and install new seal

  • Compare the old and new pump modules before installation.
  • Transfer any necessary components if the replacement part requires it.
  • Remove the old seal and install the new fuel pump module seal in the tank opening.
  • Make sure the seal sits flat and is not twisted.

Step 7: Install new fuel pump module

  • Lower the new module into the tank carefully.
  • Align the marks on the module and tank opening if present.
  • Install the lock ring and tighten it evenly using the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) or brass drift.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs) if a torque spec tool is being used on the retaining hardware for your trim setup; otherwise tighten the lock ring fully to the factory stop.

Step 8: Reconnect fuel line and wiring

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks fully into place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector and make sure the lock tab engages.
  • Inspect the seal and connections one more time.

Step 9: Reinstall cover and seat

  • Reinstall the access cover using the Torx T20 screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion by pressing it down until the clips lock.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2 to 3 times to prime the system.
  • Check carefully for fuel leaks at the access opening before starting the engine.
  • Start the engine and let it idle. Watch for rough running, warning lights, or fuel smell.
  • Take a short test drive and recheck for leaks after shutdown.
