📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels.
  • Run the fuel level low if possible; a lighter tank is much easier to handle.
  • Open the fuel door and loosen the gas cap to help relieve tank vapor pressure.
  • Quick question (so I give you the correct method): Do you have a removable access cover under the 2nd-row seat/cargo area that exposes the top of the fuel pump module, or is there no access cover (meaning the tank must be lowered)?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Remove the fuel pump electrical connector or fuel pump fuse/relay (location varies by under-hood fuse box legend).
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank the engine for 3-5 seconds to relieve any remaining pressure, then turn ignition OFF.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Step 3: Choose your access method

  • If you have an interior access cover: follow Steps 4A–9A.
  • If you do NOT have an access cover: follow Steps 4B–12B (tank-lowering method).

Step 4A: Remove interior trim to reach the pump access cover

  • Use a trim clip remover and flat-blade screwdriver to remove the needed seat cushion/trim fasteners.
  • Lift the carpet/insulation to expose the metal access cover.
  • Remove access cover fasteners with a 10mm socket.

Step 5A: Clean and disconnect lines/connectors at the module

  • Blow/brush dirt away and wipe clean with shop rags.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector by releasing the lock tab with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Place shop rags under the fuel line connection.
  • Disconnect the fuel line using a fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty). Expect a small fuel spill.

Step 6A: Remove the locking ring / retaining ring

  • Mark the ring and tank alignment with a marker pen.
  • Use a brass drift punch (specialty) and small hammer to rotate the lock ring off (brass helps avoid sparks).

Step 7A: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Lift the module straight up carefully; angle it as needed to clear the float arm.
  • Have a drain pan ready; fuel will drip from the module.
  • Remove and discard the old tank seal/O-ring.

Step 8A: Install the new module and seal

  • Install the new fuel pump module tank seal / O-ring into the tank groove.
  • Lower the new module into place without pinching the seal.
  • Reinstall the lock ring and tighten until the alignment marks line up.

Step 9A: Reconnect lines, reinstall access cover, and interior trim

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks; reinstall any retaining clips using needle-nose pliers if needed.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.
  • Reinstall the access cover using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall carpet/insulation and seat/trim fasteners using the correct 10mm socket / 12mm socket / 14mm socket as equipped.

Step 4B: Raise and support the Sequoia (tank-lowering method)

  • Chock the front wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Lift the rear with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Support the frame with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).

Step 5B: Support the fuel tank

  • Position a transmission jack (specialty) under the fuel tank with a flat support surface.
  • Use shop rags to help prevent slipping.

Step 6B: Disconnect connectors and fuel lines at the tank

  • Disconnect the tank electrical connectors using a flat-blade screwdriver to release lock tabs.
  • Disconnect fuel lines with a fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty) and catch fuel with a drain pan.

Step 7B: Remove tank straps and lower the tank slightly

  • Apply penetrating oil to strap bolts if corroded.
  • Use a 12mm socket / 14mm socket (as equipped) and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
  • Lower the tank slowly with the transmission jack (specialty), stopping to check for any lines still attached.

Step 8B: Clean the top of the tank and remove the lock ring

  • Clean dirt away using shop rags.
  • Mark alignment with a marker pen.
  • Use a brass drift punch (specialty) and small hammer to remove the lock ring.

Step 9B: Remove and replace the fuel pump module

  • Lift the module out carefully and drain into a drain pan.
  • Remove and replace the tank seal/O-ring.
  • Install the new module and reinstall the lock ring until marks align.

Step 10B: Raise tank and reinstall straps

  • Lift the tank into position using the transmission jack (specialty).
  • Start strap bolts by hand first, then tighten with a 12mm socket / 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Tighten strap bolts using a 3/8" drive torque wrench to the factory specification for your Sequoia.

Step 11B: Reconnect lines and connectors

  • Reconnect fuel lines until they click; reinstall any clips using needle-nose pliers.
  • Reconnect electrical connectors.

Step 12B: Lower vehicle

  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower fully.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Prime the system: turn ignition ON for 5 seconds, OFF for 5 seconds; repeat 3 times.
  • Start the engine and check carefully for leaks at every fuel connection.
  • If you smell raw fuel or see seepage: shut it off and fix before driving.
  • Clear any stored codes and verify fuel pressure/operation if you have a scan tool.
