🔧 CX-9 - Fuel Pump Replacement

On your CX-9, the fuel pump is part of an in-tank fuel pump module (it sits inside the fuel tank). The job is mainly about relieving fuel pressure, opening the service access, disconnecting lines/connectors, and swapping the module without contaminating the tank.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2.5-5.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ No smoking, no hot work lights, no grinding/sparks near the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool fully before starting.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the tank; contamination can ruin the new pump and injectors.
  • ⚠️ Use only a non-sparking method on the lock ring (Mazda tool preferred).
  • ⚠️ Have a fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids nearby.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Fuel pump module seal / O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Optional: fuel line retaining clips - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-9 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Run the fuel level as low as possible (lighter tank = easier/safer).
  • Open the fuel door and loosen the fuel cap to relieve tank vapor pressure.
  • Plan for fuel spills: set a drain pan and keep shop towels ready.
  • Know this tool: a fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty) is a small plastic/metal tool that releases the internal spring of a quick-connect fuel fitting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

Step 2: Relieve fuel pressure (important)

  • Remove the fuel pump fuse/relay (location depends on your CX-9’s fuse box layout).
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank for 3–5 seconds one more time to bleed off the remaining pressure.
  • Less pressure = less fuel spray.

Step 3: Access the fuel pump service opening

  • Move the rear seating area as needed to expose the access area.
  • Use a trim removal tool set to carefully lift/remove trim pieces without breaking clips.
  • Remove any access cover fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket (depending on what your CX-9 has).
  • Vacuum the area using a vacuum so no dirt falls into the tank.

Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector

  • Unplug the fuel pump module connector by releasing the lock tab using a flat-blade screwdriver (gentle pressure).
  • Place shop towels around the lines to catch any drips.

Step 5: Disconnect fuel lines from the module

  • Use the fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty) to release the quick-connect fitting(s).
  • Pull the line straight off (don’t twist hard; it can damage the fitting).
  • Direct any small fuel spill into a drain pan.

Step 6: Mark the module orientation

  • Use a permanent marker to mark the fuel pump module position relative to the tank (alignment matters for float arm clearance and sealing).

Step 7: Remove the lock ring

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring wrench (specialty) to loosen and remove the lock ring.
  • Lift the ring off and set it aside clean.
  • Do not use steel punch/hammer—spark risk.

Step 8: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Carefully lift the module up while guiding the level float arm out of the opening.
  • Keep the module tilted to avoid dumping fuel from the housing.
  • Remove the old seal/O-ring from the tank opening using a flat-blade screwdriver (gently).

Step 9: Install the new seal and new module

  • Install the new fuel pump module seal / O-ring onto the tank opening (make sure it sits flat and isn’t twisted).
  • Lower the new module into the tank, guiding the float arm in without bending it.
  • Align your marker marks so the module sits in the original orientation.

Step 10: Reinstall the lock ring

  • Install the lock ring by hand first to avoid cross-threading/misalignment.
  • Tighten using the fuel pump lock ring wrench (specialty) until fully seated.
  • Torque to Mazda specification (lock ring torque varies by version; don’t guess).

Step 11: Reconnect fuel lines and electrical

  • Reconnect the fuel line(s) until you feel/hear a click.
  • Gently tug-test each line to confirm it’s locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until the lock tab clicks.

Step 12: Reinstall the access cover and trim

  • Reinstall the access cover and fasteners using a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall trim using the trim removal tool set to guide clips into place.

Step 13: Restore power and prime the fuel system

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Cycle ignition ON (engine off) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds; repeat 3–4 times to prime the system.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle while you check for leaks at the fuel line connections and around the lock ring area.
  • If you smell strong fuel odor, shut the engine off and re-check the seal and line connections.
  • Clear any stored codes if a fuel pressure or EVAP code set during the repair (a scan tool may be needed).
  • Test drive close to home first, then re-check for any dampness or fuel smell.
