🔧 Elantra - Fuel Pump Module Replacement

On your Elantra, the fuel pump is part of an in-tank “fuel pump module” that sits inside the fuel tank and is accessed from inside the car under the rear seat. The job is mostly careful handling of fuel lines and seals to prevent leaks and fuel smells.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

Assumption: U.S.-market Elantra with under-seat access panel.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ No smoking, sparks, or hot work lights near the car.
  • ⚠️ Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel line to avoid spraying fuel.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the tank module.
  • ⚠️ Keep a fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids nearby.
  • ⚠️ Do not reuse a damaged tank seal; leaks can trigger a fuel smell and EVAP codes.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Trim removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (small)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Fuel line quick-disconnect tool set (specialty)
  • Fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty)
  • Brass drift punch
  • Small mallet
  • Shop towels
  • Catch pan
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel pump module assembly - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump module tank seal O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Fuel line retaining clips - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel level down if possible; a lighter tank reduces spills.
  • Open the fuel door and loosen the gas cap to help vent pressure.
  • Have towels and a catch pan ready for a small amount of fuel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel system pressure

  • Open the hood.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Locate the under-hood fuse/relay box and remove the fuel pump fuse/relay using needle-nose pliers.
  • Reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket, start the engine, and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank for 3 seconds one more time, then turn the key OFF.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal again using a 10mm socket.
  • Tip: This reduces fuel spray at the lines.

Step 2: Remove the rear seat cushion

  • From the rear seat area, release the seat bottom clips (usually near the front edge) using a trim removal tool.
  • Lift the seat cushion up and out.
  • Set it aside where it won’t get dirty.

Step 3: Open the fuel pump access cover

  • Find the round/oval access panel on the floor under the seat.
  • Peel back any foam/insulation and remove the access cover screws using a 10mm socket and ratchet (or a Phillips screwdriver if equipped).
  • Clean the area around the module with shop towels so dirt can’t fall into the tank.
  • Tip: Dirt in the tank can damage the new pump.

Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines

  • Unplug the fuel pump electrical connector by releasing the tab with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Place shop towels under the lines and a catch pan nearby.
  • Disconnect the fuel feed/return/vapor lines:
    • Use the fuel line quick-disconnect tool set (specialty) if the connector style requires it.
    • If it uses pinch-tabs, squeeze tabs with your fingers or needle-nose pliers and pull straight off.
    • Cap or wrap the line ends with shop towels to limit fumes.

Step 5: Remove the lock ring

  • Mark the module’s orientation to the tank with a marker (alignment helps reinstall).
  • Remove the locking ring using a fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) and ratchet.
  • If you do not have the lock ring tool, use a brass drift punch and small mallet to tap the ring counterclockwise.
  • Tip: Use brass to reduce spark risk.

Step 6: Lift out the fuel pump module

  • Carefully lift the module upward while guiding the float arm (fuel level sensor) out of the tank opening.
  • Angle it slowly to avoid bending the float arm.
  • Let fuel drain into the tank, then set the module in a catch pan.

Step 7: Replace the tank seal O-ring

  • Remove the old seal from the tank opening using a trim removal tool or your fingers.
  • Wipe the sealing surface clean with shop towels.
  • Install the new fuel pump module tank seal O-ring, ensuring it sits flat and is not twisted.
  • Tip: A twisted seal can cause a fuel smell.

Step 8: Install the new fuel pump module

  • Transfer any required items from the old module to the new one only if your replacement is not a complete assembly.
  • Lower the new module into the tank, guiding the float arm in carefully.
  • Align it with the marks you made earlier.
  • Reinstall the lock ring using the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) and ratchet.
  • Torque: Tighten the lock ring to factory specification using a torque wrench (do not overtighten).

Step 9: Reconnect fuel lines and electrical connector

  • Reconnect each fuel line until you feel/hear a click.
  • Gently tug each line to confirm it is locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Install new fuel line retaining clips if equipped and required.

Step 10: Reinstall access cover and rear seat

  • Reinstall the access cover using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Reinstall insulation/foam.
  • Reinstall the rear seat cushion and press down firmly to lock the clips.

Step 11: Prime the system and check for leaks

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay using needle-nose pliers.
  • Turn the key to ON (do not start) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds. Repeat 3 times to prime.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check under the rear seat access area for any fuel seepage or strong fuel smell.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive 5-10 minutes and recheck for fuel smell inside the cabin.
  • If the check engine light comes on, scan for codes; a loose seal/line can set EVAP codes.
  • Dispose of fuel-soaked towels safely (sealed metal container is best).
