🔧 Fit - Fuel Filler Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel filler cap on your Fit is a quick job that helps keep the EVAP system sealed (it traps fuel vapors). A bad or missing cap can cause a fuel smell and may turn on the check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area (fuel vapors are flammable).
  • ⚠️ Keep away from sparks, cigarettes, and hot surfaces.
  • ⚠️ If you just drove, let the area cool a few minutes before working near the filler neck.
  • Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap (Fit-compatible, OEM-style sealed cap) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Make sure the fuel door area is clean so dirt doesn’t fall into the filler neck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear quarter panel.
  • Use a flashlight to look for dirt or damage around the filler opening.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • If your cap has a tether (the little strap that keeps it attached), guide it out gently so you don’t twist it up.
  • Wipe the filler neck sealing surface with a shop towel (the “sealing surface” is the smooth ring where the cap’s rubber gasket sits).

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Thread the new cap on by hand (start it straight so it doesn’t cross-thread).
  • Tighten clockwise until it clicks several times (that clicking means the cap is properly tightened).
  • Tip: Keep tightening until at least 3 clicks.

Step 4: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door securely with your hand.
  • Use the flashlight to do a quick final check that the tether isn’t pinched.

âś… After Repair

  • If you had a check engine light due to a loose/bad cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after a week of normal driving, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system (or the code may need to be cleared with a scan tool).
  • Check for fuel smell after your next drive; you should not smell raw fuel near the fuel door.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
