šŸ”§ CX-50 - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap is a quick job that helps prevent fuel vapor leaks and can stop an EVAP leak warning if the old cap seal is worn or the cap won’t tighten properly.

You’ll remove the old cap and install the correct replacement until it clicks to seal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work in a well-ventilated area and keep flames/sparks away from the fuel filler.
  • āš ļø Turn the engine OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before opening the cap.
  • āš ļø Do not top off the tank after the pump clicks off; it can trigger EVAP issues.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • No tools required
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (cap with sealing gasket) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
  • Let the area cool if you just drove; avoid working near hot exhaust.
  • Wipe dirt away from the fuel filler area using a shop towel so debris doesn’t fall inside.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Press the fuel door to pop it open (CX-50 uses a push-to-open door).
  • Put on nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • If there’s a tether, let the cap hang; don’t pull hard on the tether.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area

  • Use a shop towel to wipe the filler neck lip (where the cap seals).
  • Check the old cap’s rubber seal (gasket) for cracks, flattening, or fuel smell. Cracked seal = common EVAP leak.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
  • Tighten until you hear/feel it click (usually 1–3 clicks). Clicks mean it’s sealed.
  • No torque spec is used here—hand-tighten to the clicks.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door until it latches.
  • Wipe any fingerprints or spilled fuel with a shop towel.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the filler area.
  • If you had a ā€œCheck Engineā€ light from a loose cap, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own.
  • If the light stays on after a few days, the issue may be the EVAP system (not just the cap).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor/diagnostic)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.3 hours.
