šŸ”§ Seltos - Fuel Cap Replacement

On your Seltos, ā€œfuel capā€ can mean one of two setups: a traditional screw-on gas cap, or a capless fuel filler (no removable cap). The correct repair depends on what you see when you open the fuel door.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames or sparks.
  • āš ļø Turn the engine OFF before opening the fuel door.
  • āš ļø If you smell strong fuel odor, stop and inspect for leaks before driving.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap (correct for your Seltos) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Open the fuel door and look at the filler opening:
  • 🧠 If you see a round cap you can twist off, follow Steps 1–4 below.
  • 🧠 If you do NOT see a removable cap (you see a spring-loaded flap), skip to the ā€œCapless Noteā€ in Step 4.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm whether you have a screw-on cap or a capless flap.

Step 2: Remove the old screw-on fuel cap (if equipped)

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe dirt off the cap area (don’t push debris into the opening).

Step 3: Install the new screw-on fuel cap

  • Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
  • Tighten until you feel/hear it fully seat (many caps ā€œclickā€). Snug by hand—don’t over-tighten.
  • If your cap has a tether (strap), make sure it isn’t twisted and won’t get pinched by the fuel door.

Step 4: Close up and confirm correct setup

  • Close the fuel door firmly by hand.
  • Capless Note: If your Seltos has a spring-loaded flap and no removable cap, there is no ā€œfuel capā€ to replace. If you’re getting a ā€œCheck fuel capā€ / EVAP-type warning on a capless system, the issue is usually the seal or the capless filler assembly, which is a different repair.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Seltos and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
  • If you had a warning light related to the fuel cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off after the system passes a self-test.
  • If the light stays on, the problem may not be the cap (it could be an EVAP leak elsewhere).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor/diagnostic)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
