🔧 CX-30 - Fuel Cap Replacement
On your CX-30, replacing the fuel cap is usually a quick swap if your vehicle has a traditional screw-on cap. A bad cap can trigger an EVAP/leak warning light and may cause fuel odor.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- â›˝ Work with the engine OFF and away from sparks/open flames.
- 🧤 Avoid breathing fuel vapors; wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
- 🧼 Keep dirt out of the filler neck; wipe the area before removing the cap.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean lint-free rag
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
- Fuel cap tether strap - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
- Open the fuel door and use a clean lint-free rag to wipe dust around the filler opening.
- If the check engine light is on for an EVAP leak, plan to drive a few trips after replacement; it may take time to clear on its own.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which filler type you have
- Open the fuel door and look at the filler opening.
- If you see a screw-on cap, follow Steps 2–6.
- If you see no cap and instead a spring-loaded flap (capless style), skip to Step 7.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap (screw-on type)
- Use nitrile gloves and turn the cap counterclockwise until it comes off.
- Use a clean lint-free rag to wipe the sealing surface on the filler neck (where the cap seals).
Step 3: Inspect the sealing surfaces
- Look at the rubber seal (O-ring) on the old cap for cracks, flat spots, or swelling.
- Check the filler neck lip for dirt or damage; wipe again with the clean lint-free rag if needed.
- Most “EVAP leak” issues are just a bad seal.
Step 4: Transfer/attach the tether (if equipped)
- If your old cap has a tether strap, move it to the new cap (or install the new tether).
- Use your hands only—no tools should be needed.
Step 5: Install the new fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand (clockwise).
- Tighten until it is fully seated; if your cap is the “click” type, tighten until it clicks.
- Hand-tight is enough—don’t over-tighten.
Step 6: Close up
- Close the fuel door.
- Wipe any spilled fuel with the clean lint-free rag and move the rag away from the vehicle.
Step 7: If your CX-30 is capless (no fuel cap present)
- There is no fuel cap to replace on the capless system.
- Use a clean lint-free rag to wipe the outside area around the spring-loaded flap.
- If you’re getting an EVAP-related warning on a capless system, the common fix is inspecting/replacing the capless filler neck components—which is a different repair.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there is no fuel smell near the fuel door.
- If you had a check engine light for an EVAP leak, drive normally for a few days; it may clear after the system runs its self-test.
- If the light stays on, the issue may not be the cap (could be an EVAP hose/valve leak).
