šŸ”§ Palisade - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Palisade is a quick job that helps prevent fuel vapor leaks and can stop a check-engine light caused by an EVAP leak (often from a loose or bad cap). You’ll remove the old cap, install the new one, and make sure it clicks tight.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames or smoking.
  • āš ļø Turn the engine OFF before opening the fuel door.
  • āš ļø Avoid inhaling fuel vapors; don’t top off the tank after the pump clicks off.
  • Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • If your Palisade was just running, wait a minute so fuel vapors can settle.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to press the fuel door (it’s a push-to-open style) and swing it open.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then lift it off.
  • If the cap is attached to a tether (a short retaining strap), let it hang—don’t pull or twist the tether hard.
  • Tip: If it’s stuck, twist slowly and steadily.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap onto the filler neck opening.
  • Turn it clockwise until you hear/feel it ā€œclickā€ several times and it stops tightening. This clicking is the cap’s built-in clutch that prevents overtightening.
  • Gently tug the cap to confirm it’s seated and not loose.

Step 4: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door by pressing it until it latches flush with the body.
  • Wipe any fuel residue off the area with a clean rag if needed.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Palisade and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If you had a check-engine light from a loose/bad cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after a few days, the EVAP leak may be elsewhere and will need a code scan.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.2 hours.
