🔧 Atlas - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Atlas is quick and helps prevent fuel vapors from escaping. A damaged or incorrect cap can trigger an emissions warning light and cause a fuel smell.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine OFF and keep away from sparks/flames while refueling.
  • ⚠️ Don’t smoke near the fuel filler area.
  • ⚠️ Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately and let fumes disperse.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (OEM-style, tethered) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the engine is off and the key is away from the vehicle.
  • If you just drove, wait a minute so any fuel vapors calm down.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Press the fuel door in to release it (your Atlas uses a push-to-open door when unlocked).
  • If it won’t open, use the key fob to unlock the doors and try again.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Use nitrile gloves and turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
  • Let the tether hang so the cap doesn’t scratch the paint. The tether is the small strap that keeps the cap attached to the vehicle.

Step 3: Inspect and wipe the sealing surface

  • Use a flashlight to look at the filler neck opening.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt or grit off the sealing lip so the new cap can seal.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Thread the new cap on by hand, turning clockwise.
  • Tighten until you feel/hear it fully seat (a secure “ratcheting/click” feel is normal on many OEM-style caps).
  • Hand-tight only—no tools.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Push the fuel door closed until it clicks shut.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe any fingerprints or fuel residue.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm there is no fuel smell around the filler area.
  • If your check-engine light was on for a loose cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after a few days, you may need a scan for stored codes (common related code is an EVAP leak).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $30-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $15-$45 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.2 hours.
