🔧 Sequoia - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Sequoia is a quick job: you remove the old cap and install a new one that seals correctly. A good seal prevents fuel vapor leaks and can help avoid an EVAP-related check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the fuel door.
- ⚠️ Do this with the engine OFF and away from hot exhaust parts.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves

- Open the fuel door and let the area air out for a minute.
- Have a shop towel ready to wipe the sealing surface.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Open the fuel door on your Sequoia.
- Use a flashlight to see the cap and filler neck clearly.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then remove it.
- If it’s tethered (attached by a strap), let it hang without twisting the strap.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area
- Use a flashlight to inspect the filler neck sealing lip for dirt or damage.
- Wipe the sealing surface with a shop towel.
- Clean seal area helps prevent EVAP leaks.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Place the new cap onto the filler neck and turn it clockwise.
- Tighten until you feel/hear it click several times (this means it’s fully seated and sealed).
- If the new cap has a tether, position it so the cap hangs neatly when removed.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door securely.
- Use a flashlight for a quick final check that the cap sits flat and straight.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there’s no “loose fuel cap” message (if equipped).
- If you had a check engine light from a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- If the light stays on after a few days of normal driving, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system.
