šŸ”§ Sentra - Fuel Cap Replacement

Your Sentra’s fuel cap seals the fuel tank and keeps the EVAP system (the emissions system that traps fuel vapors) working correctly. A loose or damaged cap can trigger a check-engine light and cause a fuel smell.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work in a well-ventilated area, away from flames or smoking.
  • āš ļø Turn the engine OFF and keep the key away from the car while you work.
  • āš ļø Don’t top off the tank after the pump clicks off; it can harm the EVAP system.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (EVAP/sealing type for Sentra) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Sentra on level ground and shift to P.
  • Turn the engine OFF and wait 1 minute.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt around the fuel filler area so nothing falls in.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Press the fuel door release (or open it by hand, depending on your Sentra’s setup).
  • Use a flashlight to look for cracks or debris around the filler neck opening.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Twist the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
  • If there’s a tether (the little strap that keeps the cap attached), let it hang—don’t yank it.
  • Use a clean shop towel to lightly wipe the sealing surface on the filler neck.
  • Don’t push dirt into the filler neck.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Align the new cap and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Keep turning until you hear/feel it click (usually 1–3 clicks). That click is the cap’s built-in clutch telling you it’s tight enough.
  • If the cap uses the original tether, confirm the tether isn’t twisted and the cap sits flat.

Step 4: Close up

  • Close the fuel door securely.
  • Use nitrile gloves and a shop towel to wipe any fuel residue, if present.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Sentra and confirm there’s no fuel smell near the rear quarter panel.
  • If your check-engine light was on for a loose cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after a few days, you may need the code read/cleared and the EVAP system checked for other leaks.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor/diagnostic)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
