How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2018 Nissan Pathfinder (Fix EVAP Leak & Check Engine Light)
Step-by-step fuel cap replacement with required tools/parts, safety tips, and what to do if the CEL stays on
🔧 Pathfinder - Fuel Cap Replacement
Your fuel cap seals the fuel system to prevent vapor leaks and keep the check engine light off. Replacing it is quick: you’ll remove the old cap and install a new one that clicks tight.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, cigarettes, or open flame.
- ⚠️ Turn the engine OFF and keep the key away from the vehicle while working near fuel vapors.
- ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel or see wet fuel, stop and do not drive until repaired.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap (locking or non-locking, correct fit) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Pathfinder on level ground and shift to Park.
- Shut the engine off and let any fuel vapors dissipate for a minute.
- Open the fuel door.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Twist the fuel cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
- Wipe the filler neck sealing surface using a shop towel so the new cap can seal.
Step 2: Transfer the tether (if equipped)
- Use a flashlight to look at how the cap is attached to the tether.
- If the new cap does not come with a tether, move the tether from the old cap to the new one (it typically clips or slides on).
- Tether = the small strap that prevents loss.
Step 3: Install the new fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
- Keep turning until you hear/feel it click several times (usually 1–3 clicks). That indicates it’s tight enough.
- Close the fuel door.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Pathfinder and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
- If the check engine light was on for a loose cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- If the light stays on after a few days of normal driving, the system may have another leak and will need a code scan.
