🔧 Armada - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Armada is a quick job: you’ll remove the old cap and install a new one that seals correctly. A good seal prevents fuel vapor leaks and helps avoid an evaporative-emissions (EVAP) warning light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⛽ Work outside or in a well-ventilated area (fuel vapors).
  • 🚭 No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves; fuel can irritate skin.
  • 🛑 Engine off and key away from the vehicle while you work.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • 🧼 Use a clean shop towel to wipe dust around the fuel cap area (helps keep dirt out).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the side of the vehicle.
  • Use a flashlight to see the cap and sealing area clearly.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
  • If your cap has a tether (a small strap that keeps the cap attached), let the cap hang without twisting the strap.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck lip (the round sealing edge) and the area around it.
  • Use a flashlight to check for cracks, heavy rust, or dirt buildup where the cap seals.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Use your hand to place the new cap on the filler neck and turn it clockwise.
  • Keep turning until you feel/hear it click and stop tightening normally. Clicks mean the seal is set.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door until it fully latches.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the cap is seated evenly (not cross-threaded).

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and confirm no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
  • 🟠 If you had a Check Engine light related to a loose cap, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own; otherwise it can be cleared with a scan tool.
  • 🔁 Re-check the cap after your next fill-up to make sure it still clicks tight.
