🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your CR-V is quick. A loose, cracked, or worn cap can trigger an EVAP leak and turn on the check engine light. The new cap should seal tightly and click into place so the fuel system can hold pressure properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Do this with the engine off and the vehicle parked on level ground.
  • Do not smoke or work near open flames.
  • Keep dirt and water out of the filler neck.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean shop towel
  • Gloves

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
  • Let the area around the fuel door cool if the vehicle was just driven.
  • Have the new cap ready before removing the old one.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Press the fuel door to release it and swing it open.
  • Make sure the area around the filler neck is clean.

Step 2: Remove the old cap

  • Turn the old cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes free.
  • If the cap is stuck, use a clean shop towel for a better grip.
  • Do not use pliers.

Step 3: Inspect the sealing area

  • Check the rubber seal on the cap and the filler neck for dirt or damage.
  • Wipe the sealing surface clean with a clean shop towel.

Step 4: Install the new cap

  • Align the new fuel cap and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Continue turning until you hear or feel several clicks.
  • Torque: Hand-tight only. No wrench torque is used on this repair.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door fully.
  • Make sure it sits flush with the body.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and make sure the fuel door area is sealed.
  • If the check engine light was on for an EVAP leak, it may clear after a few drive cycles.
  • If the light stays on after several drives, the EVAP system may need a scan and code check.
